I don't get it. The News is owned by Newhouse. The Vindicator is an independent. How is it that Newhouse people can come in as scabs? A puzzler.

The Ann Arbor News is the most god-awful newspaper I've ever read in a market as big as AA. What I don't understand is how the editor has time to be anywhere but in Ann Arbor improving that poorly-written, shallow, bit of Ann Arbor propaganda. I guess that helps to explain things, like why the stories are almost always void of content.

There's almost never a story that doesn't leave me wondering about some unexplained detail, I have to say. The restaurant inspections are interesting, though.

On the bus today to work I read the comics that come with the Saturday Free Press: 1. Free Press Sunday comics, 2. Detroit News Sunday comics 3. the regular Freep Saturday comics and 4. the regular News Saturday comics (comics deluge is one of the reasons I subscribe to the Free Press).

...aside from, you know, wanting to be informed and all. The news articles are what I'm really interested in. Yep.

(there's also a bonus comics section in the Freep's Way We Live section and one strip buried in the sports section plus Guindon but never mind that).

I should ammend the above -- I do like reading the letters to the editor. They always crack me up. Sometimes police beat can be good, too. Also, the recipes are a little slice of midwestern America posing as bustling metropolis at its finest.

Man, I am cranky today.

I am too, dammit. I do read the letters to the editor, though. You're right, police beat can be good.

I can't stand the grammatical errors and misspellings. I see them in the Detroit papers also, but not as often. I assume it has to do with automation of the editorial process. I concur - police beat can be a hoot.

I agree, LF, I see many typos in the AAN. I don't know what the reason is--as you say, the (bigger) Detroit papers don't seem to exhibit the same problem.
