Get in for free at the Ball by volunteering for 2 hours to check coats, sign up new FOYF members, take tickets, close the auction, or clean up. Or, just sign up for a future work party at the Freighthouse to get in free.

There will be hors d'oeuvres from Angel Cafe, a cash bar, and music by three groups: old-time music by the End of the Road Band (who used to perform each week at the Freighthouse), upbeat blues by Jo Serrapere and the Willie Dunns, and swing by the Johnstown Cats.

There will also be a live auction featuring such items as: lunch for four with Liz Brater (who will be at the Ball, along with John Dingell) and a tour of the Capitol, tattoo art, wood carvings, local getaways, golf packages, and more.

To get tickets ($50 each) visit paypal at www.foyf.org & pick them up at the door, or, get tickets at eKlectic, Haab's, the Sidetrack, Quinn's Essentials, Pub13, or (if available) at the door.

as a semi-irregular commentator here, i thought i'd add that i will be in attendance, waxing historicitically, so if any of you were interested in either meeting me or beating me up, you can do so for only $50!

Wow--that's cool! I bet you'd be an outstanding speaker. That will be the high point of the evening. Is there a special topic for your history talk?

I won't be giving any sort of official presentation to the group as a whole, just mingling and providing a bit of the historic angle to the attendees via that informal method. The bands, dancing, and live/silent auctions will obviously be the 'centerpiece' of the event.

Maybe by the next gala i'll have collected enough information to warrant a full-blown interpretation. I'm already looking forward to the possibility of conducting Freighthouse tours once the needed repairs are made.

That would be the high point to me, I meant. I like music and dancing (although not swing dancing) OK but would be more interested in learning the freighthouse's history. Tours would be very interesting, too, eventually.

well, first things first. This event has required a huge amount of work to pull off, so everyone involved is trying to stay focused on making it work. Once it's over, hopefully there will be more cash in the coffer to work with, and I think everyone has ideas for different future projects that we will start implementing - After the Preservation Ball.

BTW, I am not the dancing sort either, but dancing will certainly not be compulsory and i understand there will be plenty of folks on hand that actually know what they're doing with their feet, so you're welcome to just stand back and watch.

I am glad dancing is not compulsory. Also glad that the revitalizing of the F-house might be the vehicle to allow local history recreators to once again serve as such--very cool.

Having met Brett on a few occasions, I can assure you that the experience is well worth the $50. (And, it's acutally worth much more if he's been drinking.)

That's a good recommendation, Mark. I remember the pictures of the historical-recreation work Brett did in the past that he posted here--they were awesome. You could tell these were very good recreators passionately into their work. I wish I could have seen those productions.

I will certainly let the P.R. committee know that the citizenry of Ypsilant is clamoring for my inebriation. Possibly they can designate a special emergency fund dedicated to my bar tab.

Yes, this ties into the heavy-alcohol-use-common-in-early-Washtenaw-County thread from some days past--one must strive for accuracy, after all.
