Wow. Got lost in that site. I'm not usually one for modern and/or "public art" but I have to say that the ambition they display, their philosophy and of course their finished works are quite appealing.

I love his work. It is so vast, serene, and elemental--hugely massive yet perfectly quiet.

My favorite work of his is Running Fence. 59 ranchers allowed him to build the work on their private ranchland in California. Afterwards he gave all the materials used to the ranchers.

Ypsidixit longs to see The Gates. She fondly remembers a crazy road trip she took to NYC in college. If conditions were right, she'd jump in a car in a heartbeat to do a weekend roadtrip to see this work.

Christo (and Jean-Claude!) are truly cool. So who's your FAVORITE favorite?

Ypsidixit was losing hope that anyone would seek the answer to this burning question and so is grateful to be rescued by John, who also notes correctly that Jean-Claude is just as integral to Christo's projects as is Christo.

Ypsidixit's favorite favorite?

(can you bear the suspense?)

Andrew Goldsworthy.

I wish I was Andrew Goldsworthy... His stuff is so cool.

The impact of his work is felt even here; last summer, we were canoing the mighty Huron and came across many Goldsworthy-like cairns near the shores of the river. Some were close to paths on shore, while others had to have been constructed by canoe, due to their location deep in the river. Very cool.

That is indeed very cool. I would have liked to have seen the river-cairns. Was this the area just east of the wooden bridge in Parker Mill Park, with the land cairns on the north side of the river? Piles of balanced rocks have been there, picturesquely, for years, but if I remember right the last time I was in Parker Mill all the piles were gone.

I have seen them in many places along the Huron, from Delhi on down. But the greatest concentration last year seemed to be between Barton Dam and the M-14 overpass.

Have you seen Rivers and Tides, the Goldsworthy bio-pic? I highly recommend it. It's wonderful to watch his process of constructing these natural marvels...

Oh, that's interesting. I never knew there were other cairn-sites upstream. Now I'm curious to see the ones near Barton Dam.

I've heard of but not seen Rivers and Tides. Sounds very worthwhile. I'd love to see him building his works. I'd say there are fewer better ways to spend a day than making something like that.
