Shoot. Wish I could find an online map of the wards. And figure out how that differs from precincts.

The last time I spoke to Keith, he was in favor of Water Street. I've even seen some of his literature that he's mailed out and he's praised the idea of reclaiming Brownsfield sites. This article seems to contradict his direct mailings.

That's bizarre. How could such a discrepency be explained?

There isn't a proposed income tax either. It's an idea that's being kicked around, but has never been presented to anyone let alone council.

Laura - 2004-10-13 10:11:53
It's been proposed--raised--suggested--whatever as an income-generating idea. It has not been formally presented to anyone, including council.

It hasn't been presented to anyone and there aren't any details surrounding it either. That's hardly a proposal.

Another thing that stinks in all of this is the city is spending an incredible amount of money to clean up a site that otherwise would never be cleaned up. You've been there. You know what a sewer that area is because of contamination. It's a sad case of playing politics to criticize the city for doing something only the city had the guts to do.

Ypsilanti is dying a slow death and no one is willing to offer up any suggestions to help. The easy thing is to criticize.

Looks like Dave French held a fundraiser for him last August (3rd letter down).

Oops, sorry, you beat me to the comments. Proposed as is *raised the topic*--come now, let's not quibble.

You're right, it's easy to criticize & much harder to come up with constructive suggestions...(cough)...but if he disagrees with the Water St. project--$10 million cost overruns is a valid basis for objection in my book--he has every right to say so.

Eric * - 2004-10-13 10:28:51
He has every right to say so, but he can't mail out one thing and then make a press release to the opposite and be credible on the issue.

I haven't seen the mailing, and until I do I'm gonna completely disregard this second-hand description of an alleged mailing and go with the Eastern Echo story.

Eric * - 2004-10-13 10:34:43
Wow. What else is there to say then?

Laura - 2004-10-13 10:36:55
Oh, I should just go with whatever characterization someone hands me about some alleged mailing in order to make up my mind @ a candidate? Show me the mailing--I'll think for myself, thank you.

(and if I receive a scanned copy of it, as if no one has anything better to do, I'll post it).

Actually, you should talk to people. Keith had a booth set up for the entire Heritage Festival. Keith attends every city council meeting as does Brian Filipiak. You're basing your opinion on a press release by the candidate in question that was turned into a news story. There's not bias there? I'll get someone to send me the mailing. I could even give you Keith's email address if you want to talk to him directly.

Laura - 2004-10-13 10:48:46
No, I'm not basing my opinion on that. It's just part of the picture. I am interested to learn he goes to every City Council meeting, however--I like that. And the booth. He seems committed to his cause--instead of apathetic. Seems like he could stir things up.

The sad state of affairs in Ypsilanti is that there are two sides. City Council has the ideas because they are desparate to do anything, but their ideas aren't well thought out. The opposition doesn't have any ideas. They merely oppose everything the city council says. It's a pretty pathetic case. The Ypsilanti community is very committed and hardly apathetic. The problem is there isn't anyone to bring the two sides together.

Last week as I drove past the Water Street Wasteland I imagined a farm there. Barns. Silos. Cows. Old machinery (like I use). Corn. And I wondered how people would like it. Lots, I thought. They'd pay admission. "Farmland."

And I looked at the dirty old Motor State Products complex the pollution of which may present the next $10 million overage to the city's misguided adventure. "Factoryland," I thought. Show the kind of manufacturing processes which now have been shipped to China while we work at sweeping-up and burger-perveying. Maybe folks would pay admission here too, while our pennies last.

Oops! My pennies are gone. I'd have to play the part of Friendy Farmer Ray so I could pay my Medicare premiums. "Welcome to Olde Ypsi, kiddies, have a seat on Friendly's lap." Uh huh.

(laughs, then subsides into inky gloom due to Raymond's accuracy). (wishes Raymond didn't have to get up before sunrise so that he might have graced the debate-watching thing. Oh well.)
