Coleman's Farm Market on US-12 just east of Carpenter Road sometimes has "Coleman Grown Eggs." I know for a fact that Nick's hens eat bugs and other natural crap. However, there are cocks in the barnyard. Eggs may be fertile. That's okay unless they hid for a while and are yucky. Always crack into a separate bowl, inspect, and sniff.
Alternatively, Drakes Market on Textile Rd at Tuttle Hill and Busch's have eggs produced by "Sunrise Acres Egg Farms, Hudsonville, MI 49426, Family Owned Fram Since 1949."
The Ypsi Food Co-op offers so-called Amish brown eggs (reliably okay) and duck eggs (be cautious as with Coleman's) from I-don't-know-where.

I was gonna say the co-op. I buy vegetarian eggs at the Kroger's off Michigan Ave. They're vegetarian because they eat feed without animal byproducts--the less said the better--unlike much farm feed.

Scio-Church Rd. Just west of 94, on the North side of Scio-Church. Before Abbotts nursery. Look for the "Fresh eggs for sale" sign in yard.

Whole Foods (if you can stand the place) has eggs labeled as being from free-range chickens.

I can't in fact stand the place and never go there. They have a "Cooking and Lifestyle" room and unfortunately I'm allergic to the word "lifestyle" and anyone who would use it. Ypsi Food Coop for me.

Third World Kroger?

Well, it used to be pretty grubby, I grant you. But they did that big renovation a year or so ago and now they feature lots of organic & specialty food, although their fancy-cheese section needs a bit of expansion. I find it's pretty good now.

"Whole Paycheck" is pretty funny. :)

As the source of the inquiry to the Ypsidixit Hive Mind, I'd like to point out that my friend is explicitly not looking for stores that sell "vegetarian fed", "free range", etc. eggs. He puts extremely little faith in such labels, and would prefer to judge conditions for himself rather than relying on ill-defined packaging claims. I'm optimistic about at least "vegetarian fed"--that's a hard criterion to fudge.

Really ought to be a directory of this sort of thing--the MSU extension has a small listing, and the state has a u-pick listing, but there seems like there have to be hundreds of places in the County where you can buy food, if only sweet corn two months a year.

Murph, I'm this far from renaming my blog, thanks to you.

Yes, "vegetarian fed" does it for me. And I agree, you'd think there'd be some kind of directory. Your friend could also chat with the egg lady at the farmer's market, although I can't think of a gracious way to request a chicken inspection. Boy, talk about a Miss Manners stumper.

Murph, the "hive mind" turns out to be a completely fascinating concept in cognitive science!

I never knew a thing about it until your offhand comment. Quite interesting. Thank you for introducing me to this very absorbing idea. ---

(quietly wonders how it can be so that Murph is apparently taking classes in both law and cognitive science, but realizes it's none of her business).

Dawn Farm, a residential rehab facility in Ypsi township, also sells eggs. I have no idea what the chickens are fed, etc. But, the $$ goes to a good cause.

That's a good tip, Lisa; thank you. Would you know if they have "store hours"? Also, aren't they near Dixboro Road somewhere?

The law classes are for the more technocratic, picky side of the planning degree. The urban theory side, though, is very interested in emergent behaviors--see, for example, Steven Johnson's Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software.

But then there's the fact that I've got a girlfriend with a masters in psych, two housemates who are psych phd students, and a neuroscience phd student sitting about three feet to my left at this very second--so I can't help but learn something about this sort of stuff.

Once again you've given me another idea to ponder. Hive minds, indeed. Very fascinating. Thanks for the link and the good conversation.

Hmmm...not certain if they have particular "hours." I am assuming they do...it's something to investigate, certainly. They are on Stony Creek in Ypsi Township, south of I-94.

Addiann: Yes, many thanks go to Murph for giving us such fascinating concepts to mull over--very interesting, indeed. I loved learning about the hive mind and emergent behaviors. Very thought-provoking. Thank you, Murph.

Raymond: thank you for your kind comment.

Lisa: thank you for location info. I'll give them an egg phonecall tomorrow to see what the hours might be.
