Afterwards, Ypsidixit and friend examined with historical fascination the visible part of the old interurban track that's in the street right in front of the Elbow Room. Ypsidixit's witty friend remarked that he'd thought of emailing her a funny made-up historical story about an interurban crash caused by the theft of two spikes--the ones Y. and friend swiped from the Water Street condo site some time ago. Y. laughed, as she does so often when blessed by the company of this humorous and encyclopediacally knowledgeable personage.

Despite her high regard of Leighton's excellent blog, Ypsidixit, not a bar type, has never yet made it into the Elbow Room, but it looked like a very good place to hang out.

Ypsidixit also learned that Bombadill's used to be a butcher shop. Apparently there was some trouble because the proprietors were butchering animals on-site, which was forbidden by the then city code. The owners were then caught in a bind, since there was no abatoir in Ypsi at which they could legally butcher animals. Ypsidixit is not sure how this was resolved, but was not disturbed to drink her coffee over a floor once spattered with blood.

Bombadill's has a great green color and wooden floors. It took them a long time to get that place ready, it was a real mess before they started renovating it.

Yes, those wooden floors make it feel warm and welcoming. I like it better than any AA coffeeshop, bar none. One reason: it's not branded--it's not self-important unlike Starbucks. I wasn't forced to stare at some multinational logo. Yep, it's Bombadill's for me, pending a visit to the Ugly Mug (which, with lots of art on the walls, looks quite nice too).

I've stopped by the Mugg the past few mornings for coffee and it's basically the Mudd House with different paint, which warms my heart. They even have the same menu items (killer bagels..yummy!) and juice drinks that the old Mudd House had. I am happy. That is all.

Good bagels? Ypsidixit is very stuck on bagels and is eating one at this very moment. Her vehicle gets 9 mpb and if the Mudd House is open way early, it's goodbye Cafe Amoco. Good field report Dave D.; thank you.

ah, I used to have a New Years Eve tradition with a friend of mine where we would go to the Elbow Room. This was long before it got hip. I might have to stop by Bombadill's one of these days. I don't really drink coffee much anymore but once in a while on a cold morning, it is fun to go someplace and get a good cup of coffee and read the paper.

(duh--not the Mudd House; I meant to say the Ugly Mug. Coffee still permeating brain). Lynne, that sounds very pleasant to do on a frosty morning. It was a nice crowd of relaxed people. I was quite comfy there.

re: bagels - some other friends and I at one time thought that bagels were truly the food of the gods, because they are just so good on so many occasions. Which led to the very cryptic and cool acronym batfog (Bagels Are The Food Of the Gods), which you are free to use to baffle your friends and acquaintances, and which can be sung to the theme for batman. I don't have the same obsession w/bagels now, although they certainly are tasty.
Now that Ypsi has 2(!) coffeeshops, a bagel store would be cool.

"color scheme was lifted without permission"
...as was, subliminally I'm sure, the color scheme that my husband & I used in the downstairs interior of our house.

Suzie, I like "batfog" quite a bit. And I think your idea for a bagel shop is good--though it would have to be near campus, I think. A nice fresh garlic bagel with piles of cream cheese and some lovely lox and a sprinkle of chopped onions--mmmmmmmm. Bagels are one thing I never buy frozen--frozen bagels are gross. Gotta get 'em fresh.

Oops, you beat me to the comments. Oh, I was just joshin' about the color scheme--but it is one of my favorites, especially in the forest around this time of year.
