That's an insane amount of money. For downtown Ypsi? I don't think so. Who would pay that?

Dave D. - 2005-02-16 14:00:04
I was thinking the same thing. There's some new activity on the strip, but I can't imagine who would want to shell out that kind of money, especially when apartments a block or two away are going for half the amount. Is Ypsi becoming (*gulp*) gentrified?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 14:05:31
Yep, thre's some new activity as you say, Dave D.--but you couldn't call a thriving, bustling area.

Gentrified? Well, I guess the sushi bar answers that question...

Eric * - 2005-02-16 14:06:14
Gentrification occurs when you improve your neighborhoods and property. Is that such a horrible thing?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 14:06:51
Oh, barf. Eric *, do you actually believe that?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric * - 2005-02-16 14:09:45
Isn't your house worth more than when you bought it? As it appreciates in value, you are increasing the minimum income requirement of the next person needed to purchase it from you.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 14:18:18
Yep. In fact, it went rather drastically up in value a couple years ago. I was shocked, in fact--since it's not worth it's current market value, in my opinion.
,br>But you are incorrect to say that *I* did anything to affect that. Housing in Washtenaw County is ridiculously overpriced. It's the developers failing to include a mix of reasonably-priced and low-income housing in their plans, and not the property-tax-paying Ypsi homeowners, who are the problem.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric * - 2005-02-16 14:52:24
I'm not suggesting you are part of the problem. If anything, you are an unwilling participant. But houses have always been an investment mechanism. I can't believe that you are maintaining and/or improving your property not hoping that it appreciates.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 14:57:58
I really don't care if it appreciates. It's not really one of my main concerns. Not really even on my radar, in fact. In short, who cares? For heaven's sake, there are more important things in life.

I know some people who actually take out and use the vaccuum, right behind the feet of guests, as guests come into their house. They also forbid the guests' small children from playing (quietly) with matchbox cars because it might scratch the wood floor. And so on. Their house is an investment, not a home. I would never live that way.

Eric * - 2005-02-16 15:05:58
Why not just rent then?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 15:07:03
Because I don't want to die penniless in a garret. It's only common sense to get a mortgage instead of renting and throwing your money away. But I don't make an investment cult out of it, is all.

Laura - 2005-02-16 15:25:55
Anyways, enough about me, already. Back to the $1,400 apartments downtown. As Dave D said earlier, who would be--I hate to say it but--clueless enough to pay that when there are much more reasonable alternatives nearby?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric * - 2005-02-16 15:35:38
There aren't that many place to live that are on the main drag. That's why the price and demand is so high.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-02-16 15:40:03
Call me ignorant, but why a noisy pollution-sink would be desireable is beyond me. Even from my place I hear nothing but sirens going up, and down, and up, and down, Michigan Ave. all night Saturday night. I'd much rather live not on a main artery but a capillary.

Who lives in downtown Ypsi has the daily opportunity to pass through the corridor somewhere around 228-224ish W. Michigan. The reek rivals Arthur's, the Idle Hour, and the Tangent Gallery mensrooms. Oh, and I saw a used condom near there big as a fisherman's boot.

sounds like YD has been hanging around there again

Raymond: map says that is Park at Michigan, on the corner of the Water Street non-project. What's making it so bad down there? Which quadrant are you thinking of? (NE, SW, &c.)

Anna - 2005-02-16 17:15:00
I liked living right in downtown Ann Arbor because I could walk everywhere. I don't think it's ridiculous to want to live right in downtown Ypsi. But I do think it's really, really weird that someone is willing to pay $1400 for the honor. It didn't say how big the unit was, though -- could it be 3-4 bedrooms?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-02-16 18:40:02
I agree - for $1400, they could buy an interesting house within walking distance from the things they enjoy, and have money left over for other things (retirement, hobby, financial safety net)

Laura - 2005-02-16 19:04:48
I can see Anna's point. I'd like to just walk across Michigan Ave. to the library. And LF is right. $1,400 a month would buy a lot of house in Ypsi, depending on the neighborhood.

I think it would be a fun place to live, Ypsi seems to be moving forward, I hope Ypsi continues to gentrify. Why would the city growing and thriving be a bad thing. I hope downtown has a Prickly Pear and and movie theatre someday. Catching a band at the Elbow after getting dinner at a nice restaurant sounds like a good thing to me.

hi Robert: welcome to the blog. Catching a band at the Elbow after getting dinner at a nice restaurant is indeed a good thing. Middle-class folks being priced out of downtown housing is not a good thing.
