Wide discrepancies in the stated impact area - the pros say a couple thousand acres, the antis say 1.5 million acres. 2 to 4 thousand acres sounds ridiculously low to me.

That doesn't seem like enough room for a whole industry to exist in. Didn't I hear somewhere that some people were only counting the square footage of the footprints of the supports, &c. actually touching the ground?

Yup. They conveniently forgot the infrastructure needed to transport supplies, people, equipment and the crude itself.

Oh, really? I couldn't remember where I heard that--the radio, no doubt. I need to dig around tonight to see what each side is saying.

The roads connecting the sites alone will shatter the estimate of a few thousand acres impacted. What a buncha crap.

I used to pay attention to where US registered trucks went. Some of the trucks shipped up to the Arctic Circle belonged to -- you guessed it! -- Halliburton! oil exploration experts beyond compare.

Pentagon auditors are still trying to navigate the Haliburton labyrinth in Iraq. 108 million in question right now and reported data don't match the company's own internal accounting. That last sentence is starting to sound like a broken record.

Raymond: may I ask, what is the time period you are referring to?

LF: That's right, they are still being audited...it's been a while now, if I remember correctly. Meanwhile I am waiting to hear the sentence for the found-guilty Worldcom exec.

Bernard Ebbers, the latest inductee into the Pantheon of Bungholes. Nice defense, Bernard - (paraphrased) "My grades weren't very good in college. I know nothing of accounting practices"
Those excuses don't absolve the average person who screws up and gets in over their head. 400 million dollars in personal loans?! Poor Bernie doesn't understand accounting. What a lying jackass.

I don't know much about the environmental impact of this kind of operation but I had a thought. Does anyone know how feasible it would be to bury an entire drilling operation? Everything, including people and their dwellings, accessible through one or two tunnels? At least that way the environment on the surface doesn't get impacted as much. Maybe you could reduce the surface presence to a few hundred acres that way.

I've read that drilling ANWR will only yield approximately enough for six-month's consumption by the U.S. Further, it will be ten years of exploration, drilling, porcessing and refinement before this oil actually reaches the market.
So, we're going to permanantly ruin this area for...what? This won't have any sort of lasting efect on either the cost or supply reserves of oil. So whay do it?
Dig deep enough and you'll find a friend of Bush who stands who reap a great deal of profit. And that's why.

be Oh be, that's an interesting idea. I imagine people might argue it's too costly to excavate & build underground.

Dan: I've heard that 6-month figure, too. It seems foolhardy to build everything for such meagre returns--one does wonder.
