I imagine I am one of those huge red water pumps and the river is beer. They fire me up once and awhile and I suck, gurgle, and gulp greedily at the water. Only to blast it out my unfurled hose into the woods. They know my limits. Seriously though, they took my parking spot away. hOPE i GET IT BACK SOON. And at least now I won't get rained on sitting under the new road this (Fall?)

This Fall?...good question. I wonder when that whole uproar will be done. Parker Mill access is also blockaded during at least this phase of construction.

You're right, the bridge will make a good shelter for bikers.

I'm impatiently waiting for the completion of the bike path at that intersection. I've ridden through the Dixboro/Huron River Dr. intersection from Gallup park on my way east and thought I was going to get killed. Crappy intersection.
After the path is complete, there will be a nice, unbroken ride from A2 to Ypsi on paths.

Yes, that's been a very bad--extra bad--corner lately. Concrete berms narrow the whole place down, traffic is heavy as ever, and construction stuff littering the visual landscape makes bikers less visible I think.

I'm also eager for the path to be finished. Meanwhile I was scrutinizing a map of Parker Mill the other day and noticed a new park--Forest Park. Never went there but will have to check it out.

non-sequitur post - on Talk of the Nation today, there was a discussion about press releases and media ethics. I only caught snippets, but it seemed to mirror your thread from a few weeks back.

I listened to it raptly. It was a good discussion. They mentioned how the slur term "press release journalist" was a term of greatest scorn. Did any part of the discussion leap out at you LF?

I literally heard only fragments - I'm going to have to quit my job if the interuptions don't stop.
I plan to listen to it shortly at npr.org

It was very interesting. I'd be interested to hear what you think later on if you'd like to talk about it.

I agree - that was an outstanding program. Some good comments, such as Tom Rosenstiel's statement that the two tenets of good journalism are 1) you don't become an arm of the government and 2) you don't put press releases in newspapers.
I was troubled by Carol's comment that 50% of the stories run at the magazine she worked for were press releases that were barely changed or unchanged. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised as magazines are blatant product shills, but 50%?!.
Tom R's description of the evolution of press was telling as well - it was once a constituency to be courted, but now is just a conduit employed by the government and corporations. Great show.

Plus, Larry Moskovitz from Media Link sounded just like Dr. Johnny Fever from WKRP

I noticed the "two tenets" comment too. As far as "arm of the government," in my book that goes for "arm of advertisers" or "arm of journalist's pals" or "arm of the local Chamber of Commerce" or any other special interest.

I too was shocked by Carol's somewhat blithe account of the large # of press releases finding their way into magazines. It makes me realize how crucial a skill critical thinking is. A critical thinker will be able to detect the buncombe from the news--usually, anyways. Noam Chomsky said it's almost impossible to find out what's really going on--to get a story from many different perspectives, to ferret out hidden biases in stories, to realize what's missing in stories. He was right. It would take me probably most of the day, of solid reading, to get truly halfway well-informed. For someone who works full-time, you have to pick your media shrewdly and be on guard.

Thanks for your impressions LF. (Funny, I was just nostalgically thinking about the WKRP show yesterday).

"Baby, if you've ever wondered,
"Wondered, what ever became of me...
"I'm livin' on the air in Cincinnati,
"Cincinnati, WKRP..."

Stop...must not...let ancient theme song...infiltrate and take over brain...
