I think that it's actually a reflection of the fact that kitchens are getting so enormous. It used to be sort of a luxury to have an "eat in" kitchen, now it's almost considered an necessity and people don't really use the dining room for every day dining anymore. Of course, people aren't eating dinner together as much as they used to, but they also aren't doing as much formal entertaining at home the way they used to. My grandmother and grandfather used to go to a dinner party every weekend and had them quite often at home. People didn't go to restaurants as often as they do now.
