Ypsidixit vaguely remembers a concrete stairway in Riverside Park as being the most romantic spot in Ypsi, if a bit too brightly illuminated at night. But who am I to quibble.

Hmm. And all this time I thought a park bench by the river in Riverside park on a warm autumn evening was Ypsi's most romantic spot. I guess it isnt a surprise that I dont have kids!

Seriously though. I love Cady's but never really think of it as a particularly romantic place to be.

If used condoms and empty liquor bottles are any indication, the concrete stairway in Riverside Park wins.

Ypsidweller - 2005-03-11 08:32:09
Cady's has a chair that Clinton farted in. Bill, not Hillary, dang.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 09:05:46
Lynne: I know which bench you speak of, I think. Yes, it's awfully nice to lounge there and watch the river on a warm fall day.

Raymond: well, I have to say I wasn't quite thinking about that...degree of festivity. Just a smooch.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 09:08:25
Ypsidweller: thank you for that tidbit of lore. May I ask, which chair is that? No memorial plaque I daresay.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

YD - 2005-03-11 09:20:52
There is a plaque on the chair. We had to go eat there one time to view it. But I don't really care for Cady's.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 09:22:38
I'll be. I was joking about the plaque and didn't expect there'd actually be one. YD, may I please ask, why do you not care too much for Cady's? Just wondering.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

yd - 2005-03-11 09:40:32
They move the chair around (I was told) like musical chairs. So if your lucky, you can rip one in it too. Something to tell your grandkids. I don't really know why I don't like Cady's. Nothing specific. The food is so so. The atmosphere is so so. I'd rather play trivia at Aubrees.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 09:55:40
You'd think they'd put it in its own special area with one of those museum ropes connecting the arms.

I didn't know Aubree's had a Trivia Night. May I ask, what night is that?--I can put it on the calendar.

I bet they have tons of sports questions--I'd be clueless on that front.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

YD - 2005-03-11 09:59:19
You can play trivia there anytime they are open. You get a little keypad if you ask for one. That review of Cady's is super jive. Calling that place elegant is like calling Ypsi cosmopolitan. I mean, the place is ok, but that about it. Haab's has better food if you ask me.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:02:10
Oh, I see. Sounds fun.

Yes, I thought the review was a little bit over the top, too. And I like everything I've ever eaten at Haab's, and it's always been very fresh and delicious.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

yd - 2005-03-11 10:05:56
Bummer that Haab's had to paint over the big "Chicken in the Rough" chicken. The one holding the golfclub. It had been on the wall for 70 or so years. Seems C.I.T.R. was a franchise. They bought the batter. But now there is a new owner or something and they have to pay more, so they were threatened with a lawsuit if they sold chicken in the rough. So they painted over the chicken. Which was a great thing about the decor. I want to find the chicken in the rough company, write them a letter saying they are bullshit and I'm gonna tell everyone not to buy chicken in the rough if they see it anywhere else. But I probably won't.

YD, would you please forgive my ignorance, as always--was this outdoors sign art? Or an indoor mural? I vaguely remember the image but can't place it.

Indoor mural. It was huge. Last time I ate there, the place smelled like fresh paint and it was gone. Too bad.

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:12:57
Wow. Great image. I guess "no utensils" is part of the "rough" theme. Have to say I'm hungry just looking at the picture. Thanks for posting it.

Weirdly, the chicken has a hook, pirate-style, on its left leg.

YD - 2005-03-11 10:18:26
Other restaurants had CITR. Metzgers has some old paraphenalia when they had CITR years ago. I guess Haabs will still serve it, or something like it. But it cannot be called CITR anymore and they have to make their own batter.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:20:43
A shame they couldn't work out an agreement. But I will try the Haab's CITR replacement. Sounds very good. Have you tried it, YD?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

yd - 2005-03-11 10:22:20
I have tried it. It is very good. Haabs shoestring potatoes are good too. But I always get beef there. Ususally a steak or tenderloin.

YD - 2005-03-11 10:25:16
Martini Alfedo is good if you like to eat shoeleather and rubber soles.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:25:42
I'm usually there at lunchtime, and have one of their wonderful burgers (with mega onion rings). The CITR is on my list though.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:27:00
Oops. I was talking about Haab's--have never tried Martini Alfredo's. Or that tiny new cafe on Pearl Street, the Mi-Hut. Too much open space in there. I like nooks.

Powells Pub is good if you like indigestion and dashing to the bathroom.

Oops, I forgot, There kitchen burned up a month ago.

I used to love Aubrees chili till I saw they health department writeup in the news. Chili was at incorrect temperature.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 10:40:16
I'm sure they corrected that when it was pointed out. Also, health departments tend to be over-strict for safety's sake. I think the chili would be OK.

Once, I made the mistake of ordering the lunch special at TC's Speakeasy (Greasy's Streakeasy) and I got food poisoning. It was called a "Joegie", a sloppy Joe in a hoagie bun. I think they were trying to peddle expired beef. I literally couldn't eat for three days and was violently ill. I was so pissed, I thought about going back and kicking the grinning cook's ass.
That was ten years ago. I imagine things have improved since then.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-03-11 12:02:34
I had Chicken in the Rough at Haab's about a month before they stopped it. They gave you a ton of chicken and shoestrings and I thought the chicken was perty durned good. You got a biscuit with honey also.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 12:10:48
I am sorry to hear about what sounds like a pretty bad bout of food poisoning--for three days, no less.

Sounds like maybe I should skip about five meals before essaying (their current version of) Chicken in the Rough.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-03-11 12:16:52
Yep. You get a giant portion at Haabs.

As for the Joegie incident, I probably shouldn't have gone to a bar to get food. If I remember right, YD was there too and didn't finish his Joegie because he suspected something was wrong with it and, ergo, didn't get sick. I probably should have followed his lead. All I could do for three days was drink water and eat tums. Nothing else would stay put.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 12:23:38
It's usually impossible to tell if something is off, and certainly not your fault. As you say, sounds like a bad batch of beef tossed into the Joegie pot. The only time I ever got food poisoning at any Ypsi restaurant was at the White Castle on Carpenter and Packard. Never went back; a shame, since I love sliders.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-03-11 12:36:15
YD must be a foodie savant, because he ferreted out the corrupted beef pretty quickly.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-03-11 12:40:12
Of course, I didn't believe him and paid the price
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 12:46:05
When YD detected that, did they give you a refund? Just wondering.

At any rate, we have 2 mentions of Riverside Park as the mecca of Ypsi romance. I'd say Highland Park, too; very beautiful there, especially in the back overlooking the valley.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Jughead - 2005-03-11 14:57:49
I think Legg's and Deja Vu could be said to be Ypsi's meccas of romance.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-11 19:15:52
For some maybe. Or maybe the tip of Peninsular Park, despite the rest of the park's somewhat gloomy atmosphere.

While the praise of Cady's was a bit over the top, the praise of Haab's is even moreso.

Cady's has a decent menu, but it overcharges for the smallest things, like condiments, that should be compris. And that fireplace, if I remember correctly, is wasted on the smoking/TV area across from the bar. Personally, I don't associate romance with smoke and the Faux News Channel, but a romantic atmosphere depends on what you bring to it.

I think that Mr. French charges too much, but he probably does so to maintain staff salaries. And the service is pretty good in my opinion. So, with these caveats, the review was pretty accurate; to me, Cady's is the closest thing Ypsi has to a destination restaurant.

What I don't understand is the fascination with Haab's in this thread. With the exception of Chicken in the Rough, there are no economical menu items (that I remember.) Every meal I've ever eaten there seemed overpriced and underimagined. Even the "AAA Approved" sign is deceptive. Last I checked, Haab's had only a 1-Diamond rating, ranking it with every other diner that uses paper placemats. It could, and should, do better. I've occasionally fantasized that Haab's became a microbrewery a la A2's Grizzly Peak, with an adventurous menu and a remodeled interior that takes advantage of its coziness. Then we'd have a true destination restaurant in Ypsi.

But until Haab's lives up to its reputation, and its potential, Cady's is the better restaurant by far. In my opinion. :-)

The Wolverine is my destination this morning.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric - 2005-03-12 10:20:19
I like the Wolverine, too.

As I read my lengthy remarks in the light of day, I sound like I was ranting. Sorry.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-12 12:09:43
No apology necessary of course--everyone's entitled to his or her opinion.

I like Haab's for its non-chain-ness, for big portions, for (I think) reasonable prices, for take-your-parent-out-appropriateness, for a big variety of choices, for a folksy decor, for relaxed atmosphere, for central location.

I find Penninsular park far from gloomy. I find it very it the opposite of insular. The golden moments of the end of every work day are spent there.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-12 14:16:52
The end of the park is nice. Watch the light on the water. Look at the weird cage-tree thing on the way.

Gloomywise I think it might be a bit different for a guy as opposed to a woman however, not to be sexist or anything.
