There is no shortage of nefarious characters raoming the streets surrounding the school. When I opened my door yesterday morning to retreive the newspaper I startled a shady type that appeared to be looking in my windows a moment before. I just stood there in my underwear as he slowly shuffled off looking sheepishly back at me every ten feet or so. I see people I have never seen before daily around there and Ypsi in general. I really wish they would give a description of the perpetrator as I believe I would have a good chance of spotting them. I do hope the police do that. I am an "America's Most Wanted" watcher type, who would love to catch this guy. I also found the plastic bins in my truck (That are weighted with books) with the lids undone that same morning.

It would be a good public service if the Courier got the perp description into its upcoming issue.

YD: Good heavens, I'm glad that guy didn't break in or bother you. Window-peeping is a more threatening crime than people commonly think. No good. Not to mention your truck messed with again, which I'd find very irritating.

When I had a TV, I religiously watched "America's Most Wanted," and "Cops" as well. At any rate, I'll try to find out if the police released a description.

The monster has an advanced degree in scrotum removal. I hope he tries to come in next time.

I forgot about the dog. Good; I'm glad he/she is in the house, with people wandering around and peering in windows like that. Jeez.

I also saw the ambulance they talked about the night it happened. Ambulances go to the old school frequently. A couple times a week usually. I can always see the lights flashing. They always pull into the back entrance which I have a good view of.

Laura - 2005-03-08 10:37:48
I had no idea the ambulances were so frequent there. There is a (small) parking lot in the back if I remember right (by the old sculptures set in the wall).

Several interesting facts come together here.

1. The criminal slipped in when an ambulance came.
2. The criminal likely knew that ambulances often come to Cross Street Village. Therefore, he probably resides in the neighborhood.

3. It was a chilly Feb. night. This guy didn't wait around for hours till an ambulance showed up. He likely moved in when he saw the ambulance, another indication that he was probably familiar with/a resident of the neighborhood.

tHERE ARE SEVERAL VACANT HOUSE AROUND TOO WHERE ONE COULD CAMP OUT FOR A FEW NIGHTS AND NO ONE WOULD KNOW. I'll have to check them out on a walk tonight.

Well, luckily it sounded as if it could have been a hell of a lot worse. An elderly woman was murdered a couple years back at a senior home in AA. I will have to be much more aware and vigilant now.

There is a bus stop right next to the apartment. Maybe he was waiting for a bus, or appeared to be, and then he saw an opportunity arise with the arriving ambulance.

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:17:19
Wow, YD--I had no idea there were vacant houses in that neighborhood. I pass by there every a.m. on the bus and it always looked pretty decently maintained overall to me. But that sounds likely--that it might be someone camping in there. Another indicator that he is from the neighborhood--some guy coming from another town would have no idea which buildings are vacant. And someone from across Ypsi might not know which buildings in this specific neighborhood are vacant.

I know exactly where that bus stop is. That would be a good cover if you had one eye on Cross Street Village, ready to move in.

Another clue: he picked the lock. I'm guessing that this signifies that this is not this person's first crime. He might have a rap sheet.

A mystery: why did he go all the way up to the third floor? Seems like that would made it more likely to get caught on the way out. Did he have any way of knowing that one particular woman had a $400 stash?

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:20:23
The bus stop has a bench, too, if I remember right--ideal for innocent lounging.

There was a guy that lived at the house on Olive/Adams (SW corner) who was sent to prison for not maintaining the agreement of his probation (3rd offense) I looked him up in OTIS and saw he doesn't look so good and is supposed to get out in March or May. He was a locksmith. He was sent to prison last spring. He was one of the regular (weird times) creeper. Always tring to sell shit (He found)

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:25:31
Hm. Interesting. One wonders, if the release date was March, if he was just released. The locksmith detail is certainly interesting.

How would this person sell stuff he found? Where did he find it? What sort of things? I'm just curious, if you don't mind, YD.

yd - 2005-03-08 11:25:47
It appears he is still in prison, due to be release 9/2005. I called the YP and asked if they are going to release a description. (They gave me detective ans machine, I left message)

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:27:23
Awesome--I was gonna do that at lunchtime. Thank you YD. It would be highly useful information, especially since so many Ypsidixit readers are local people. Good for you YD.

Well, if there were no deadbolt, opening the door is easily learned in 4th grade. So saying the door was picked doesn't really say much. I didn't want to associate with the creeper in jail. He would just ask sometimes: Hey you need a compressor?" I never needed or wanted anything from him.

You are right, YD: lock-picking is a more common, and easier skill than I said; good point.

I appreciate your making those links to, presumably, house photos, YD--but, rats, looks like the link bumps you to a login page, I'm sorry to say...

Eek. Scary. I have a friend who lives in the purple house on the NW corner of Adams and Olive. I am sure she wont like to hear of this.

Dave D. - 2005-03-08 11:42:50
I live in the same area and been broken into a few times, but this is obviously more severe. The cops are either too understaffed or apathetic to do sh*t around the neighborhood, so you get something like this happening. Even the occasional cop cruising thru on a bike, or slowly in a car, would significantly discourage both petty and severe crimes in the area around Cross street village, but nobody cares. Can't wait until summer...*sigh*
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:42:56
Yes, that's a bit too close for comfort if this person is wandering around. Deadbolt time.

Oops. I meant SE corner. I always get my directions confused in Ypsilanti for some reason.

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:46:30
Sorry, DaveD--my last comment was about Lynne's friend. DaveD: "a few" times? Wow. Scary.

Yes, visible bike police would be helpful I think. Some cities have used mannekins in cars as decoys...but I don't think that would fly in Ypsi.

yd - 2005-03-08 11:49:02
Blaming the cops does not seem logical. I have always felt safe around there and they always come withing a couple minutes the few times I have called for the couch bonfire party at the house across the street, the stinky dude passed out in the street in the morning or 4am squeeling tire/ glass breaking parties. I think the YP is pretty good. You can't blame a doctor when you get cancer. They just want to help. I believe that. And I do see them drive by frequently. Expecting them to be everywhere at everytime is wishful thinking.

yd - 2005-03-08 11:52:50
I love summer in Ypsi. A majority of students leave. It is much quieter.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:53:21
YD: My experiences with the police have been good. They were helpful and professional on more than one occasion. They also let me off with a friendly warning instead of writing a pricey ticket when my dog got loose one night and barked up a storm.

I also believe they want to help and are doing the best they can with meagre resources.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Dave D. - 2005-03-08 11:55:05
I don't blame the cops entirely, but the only time I see them in my neck is when they're flying down Adams to answer a call at Eastern village or whatnot. The neighborhood has been starting to get scary the past year, and noone's doing anything about it and after this I'm more frustrated than ever...so who am I supposed to look to? I've had two friends robbed and beaten up walking a few blocks from downtown after a night at TC's, Elbow, or Tap, and I figure for me it's only a matter of time. Yeah, they come when you call, but so what? An ounce of prevention..
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Ingrid - 2005-03-08 11:58:04
The Ypsi police only have enough money to have two cars out at any given time. I wonder why the ambulance people just let the guy slip in? Was it HVA?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 11:58:39
DaveD, if you don't mind my asking, why the change in the last year? The robberies and beatings--just off downtown--are scary and I'm sorry to hear about that.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 12:00:07
Ingrid: I was wondering if it was one of those automatic doors. The ambulance people could be inside for some time & the door would be open for a while before automatically closing. I know such a door was a problem in Ann Arbor's Miller Manor, letting non-residents slip in.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Al P. - 2005-03-08 12:03:08
Residents at Miller Manor let non-residents in. The door closes slowly for wheelchairs and elderly. The Observor article was biased/alarmist crap.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 12:08:28
Al P., do you happen to know, by chance, if this is the same kind of door at Cross Street Village? I imagine so.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

LF - 2005-03-08 18:41:55
YD feels safe because he has a giant, fanged, four-legged, teutonic killing machine at home 24 hours a day.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2005-03-08 19:56:59
Well, YD probably is a lot safer for having a big, aggressive dog on site, especially if people are wandering around peering into windows.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

raymond - 2005-03-09 07:32:17
At least when the granny-raper runs away he can feel safe from traffic when gets up at the intersection by Cross Street.

Apropos of absolutely nothing, especially this topic, I went to the Sidetrack last night and had a clear view of the Thompson Bldg out the window. What a mess! It could be a nice building if they ever get the legal issues straightened out.

Tom: It is a mess. You can see big cracks running up the front and sagging areas. A completely unnecessary shame.
