Billy Hardesty lay in his hospital bed Tuesday morning as 14th District Court Judge Kenneth Bronson arraigned him on five counts of murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder.

He is recovering in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital from wounds received during a shootout with police Thursday.

Hardesty, 21, appeared to be gasping for breath or sobbing during the first part of the proceedings and attempted to talk to the judge after the charges were read.

His attorney, Robert Meston of Belleville, objected to his saying anything to the judge and stayed to talk with Hardesty afterwards.

William Hidenfelter, who along with Meston will be representing Hardesty at least through the preliminary exam period, said Hardesty was very confused by all the people present at the hearing.

Present were representatives from the Ypsilanti Police Department, State police, the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Department, three members of the press, Hardestys attorneys, representatives of the Washtenaw County prosecutors office and Bronson.

Bronson set 9 a.m. Nov. 1 for when Hardesty is to appear for his preliminary exam on the murder charge involving the shooting death of Daniel Wood, 38, of Canton Township, and on the attempted murder charges involving the shootings of Bobby J. Baker, 26, of Westland, and Tommy L. Brown, 29, of Tecumseh.

He is to appear in 14th District Court Judge Robert Finks court on those charges.

A preliminary exam for the murder charges involving the deaths of Hardestys parents, Ron and Jan Hardesty, has been set for next Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Bronsons court.

At 9 a.m. Nov. 2, a preliminary exam is scheduled in 14th District Court Judge Thomas Sheas court on the murder charges involving the shooting deaths of Troy Curry, 28, of Canton Township, and Timothy Schofield, 22, of Belleville.

The different judges are being utilized because the crimes occurred in three municipalities, each subject to a different branch of the court.

Police believe Hardesty killed his parents at their Van Buren Township home Wednesday before beginning an overnight shooting spree.

Curry and Schofield were slain early Thursday morning outside a downtown Ypsilanti bar.

Wood was fatally shot at an Ypsilanti Township tool and die firm early Thursday, and Baker and Brown were wounded.

Bronson set $50,000 bonds on the charges of assault with intent to murder which involved the shootings of Baker and Brown; but no bond is possible for the murder charges so Hardesty was remanded to the custody of the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Department, which has an around-the-clock guard on him at the hospital.

Lynwood Noah, senior assistant prosecutor for Washtenaw County, said the entire adjudication will be in Washtenaw County even though two of the murders occurred in Wayne County. State law permits adjudication of the entire matter in one county.

At the time, victims Baker and Brown were also being treated at St. Joe's, a fact that doubtless caused much tension and worry among the staff.
