I was under the impression that 'Hooptie' was a synonym for 'Beater,' but I haven't heard it used all that much...

Can anyone confirm this?

I've also heard 'hooptie' used for 'beater'; i.e., a beat-up old car.

I think it's a great word, and like it.

That's hilarious, thanks Tom!

"Any car that meets the following: a) driver must enter car through passenger side b) three different brand and size tires - 3 of them missing hubcap c) exhaust is held up by half a clothes hanger - other half replaces the antenna d) backfires every three blocks - loudest backfire being when car is turned off e) must open door at drive-threws as windows don't roll down f) you only get one AM station and the tape deck eats all tapes inserted g) can't open the glove box as the whole thing will fall out h) if you let go of steering wheel while driving you'll make a u-turn i) must manually move blinker lever up and down as it no longer blinks on it's own j) must keep one foot on brake and one on accelerator when at a complete stop k) has had the same temporary registration sticker in the window for the last 18 months l) has all the above issues but still has a $200 professional tint job."

It's true -- all true! *sob*

My favorite was the 1988 Honda Accord (purchased in 2001 for $750) with the "automatic" windows you had to put up by elbowing the power switch and forcing the glass up between palms smashed on either side. Dang, I miss that car. Got 40mpg though, and was totalled in an unfortunate rear-ending accident on Grand River on the way to a friend's wedding.

I hate to rain on Jane's parade, but while the TDI gets great mileage, it's not so hot when it comes to emissions. In fact, it cannot be sold in California because its NOX and particulate emmissions are higher than California pollution standards allow. I have no idea how the emissions from biodiesel fuel compares from emissions from regular diesel fuel, perhaps biodiesel is cleaner.

For more, see this article.

Yeah, the NOX is still a pain in the butt, but b100 does reduce several other smog-causing baddies, including C02 by 78%, sulfur by 100%.

No, it's not perfect, but something tells me that doing anything to reduce greenhouse gasses is a good thing.

That Accord sounds like like the sister to my venerable blue college-era Chevy Chevette, which had, um, minimal brakes and a big hole in both floorboards. Keep your feet to the side if you don't want to have them snapped off. The upclose movie of the passing pavement was vaguely entertaining, though. My dad exploded when he found out about the brake situation (I'd bought the car myself in a fit of stupidity--it was a bargain, strangely). And he fixed them.
