This is an important story, tying in to all sorts of important trends in the county--the changing nature of crime, the efficacy of the county court system, &c. Ypsidixit is surprised that neither the News nor the Courier has examined this millage issue. Or the Eastern Highlands rent strike--another important story.

Ypsidixit is a impatient with the complacency of local papers. She wants some sharp reporters dissecting these complex and big stories into readable articles prominently presented.

Thanks for the link, Laura, to a valuable and informative story. The statistics mentioned in the article were especially interesting. I've been at a loss trying to decide on this millage; you may have swayed my vote.

Welcome to the blog, Jeff, and thank you for your comment. I'm in awe that my opinion might actually have swayed someone's vote--but, really, the bad situation speaks for itself. I think the county's been making do and scraping by with the jail they have but crime is outstripping their capacity to house these people--and they should be housed decently, too, in a clean, uncrowded, and reasonably comfortable place.

I've never visited the jail, but a friend of mine has spent time there. Apparently those in the know refer to it as the "Hogback Hilton" and it has a reputation as one of the best county jails in Michigan (from an inmate's perspective, I assume). But I tend to be supportive of millage proposals, if only as a counter to the knee-jerkers who automatically vote down any proposed public spending regardless of purpose or necessity. I'm still not 100% decided, though as a transient resident, I'm leaning towards supporting this one - pass the millage and let others foot the bill. I still need to do some homework.
