Speaking of ill-fated, fanaticism-fueled journeys, yes I did bike to work today in case (unlikely) anyone is wondering. I saw only one other winter-biker. The storm made it a point of pride to drag that old bike to work. At any rate, back to M.D.

well, did you have to push it through the streets to and from the bus? I can't imagine riding a bike through the amount of snow we have here? How much did you get in Yspi?

Ypsi got around six inches or so, looks like. I lucked out, actually--sidewalks everywhere were pretty much cleaned off already by those snow-whisker rolling brush things. No big deal, actually.

Everywhere in Ann Arbor, I mean. More or less. Ypsi township doesn't have a snow-whisker rolling brush thing to my knowledge. However, even our little street was immediately scraped clean--as I was in the driveway closing the gate, in fact-so riding down to the bus stop was fine. Streets were fine, relatively speaking, till we got to the DMZ (Golfside Road).

Funny that streets are fine in Ypsi then as soon as you hit the AA border they suck.

Streets in downtown AA were--(peeks) *are* mushland. Not scraped clean as a whistle like my own tiny residential street. That was one giant truck. Like something out of a cartoon. I smiled at the guy to try and express, "thank you for scraping my microstreet so nicely so that you can even bike on it."

Ypsi services are pretyy darn good (Don't tell too many that though)

(whispers) they're very good in my experience, especially in the township.

(even more quietly) garbage is outstanding too--I can put out five million bags if I feel like it.

(barely audible) and they're all cheerfully whisked away (shuts up finally).

there's no such whiskered animal at all to clean sidewalks in Lansing. In fact, the big plows don't get to the "side" streets until about three days after the downfall. Guess who gets to clean off all the sidewalks??? And if we don't, there's a major fine.

I wish there were a major fine for non-sidewalk-cleaners in Ypsi. I think it's the law, there, too. All the way home from the bus stop it's bike--portage over mush--bike--portage. I shoot narrow-eyed looks at the houses where one's forced to portage.

addiann - 2005-01-06 13:03:27
not to forget, some of them (us) in those portage houses are old, and get to the shoveling around noon. A piece at a time. Sorry.

You are right. I should be more tolerant. There is one lady at the end of the block that never shovels the walk, but I don't mind and wouldn't narrow my eyes at her, needless to say.

We're happily sidewalkless. When I'm lucky, I can get an antique tractor started to drive up and down the 300' driveway to plow a path through the drifts. Sometimes we just park out by the road in case of snow or mud. In that scenario, we haul stuff back to the house and barn on sleds or wagons. We ain't lazy. We CRAZY. The 100# dog thinks so anyway, when I harness him and attach him to conveyances. He doesn't get it at all. He just frolics, rolls, and barks.

...but as to Moby Dick and this movie you mention, duh...? just finished reading Longfellow's Giles Cory play. Nap time...

How funny--I can just picture that--happily frolicking harnessed dog bouncing around in front of stationary sled of stuff.

hmm. perhaps that selection is tied in to the crucibulum infidelium project...?

Pay It Forward Dept: Here in EL about 5 inches...... I was out shoveling with bouncing snow-day kids when a snow -service truck plow came to clean my geriatric neighbor's driveway....a plow in both front *and* back...the kids and I just stared in amazement. I guess it was evident in my schlumpy, better-get-back-to-the-next-hour-of-shoveling-the-heavy-wet stuff posture how dejected I was b/c the next thing I knew the truck was turning into **my** driveway and scraped it clean. "I own the truck, so I guess I can spare a few minutes," the driver said....I offered a few dollars for his time, but he said that he's had a lot of people be nice to him over the years, so he thought he could do the same. With all the time I saved, I made a styrofoam fresh-water birdbath for the hungry critters out back. As for MD, is this the Bill Murray movie?

BTW, is it true that EMU was closed?

Bless his heart. Hope someone does something nice for him in turn. I've never seen a truck with two plows, though.

Styrofoam is a good idea for a fresh-water birdbath, much better than my iron pan. It's important to maintain a source of fresh water for the birds in winter.

Yes, "Life Aquatic" is the new Bill Murray movie.

EMU: hmm, I dunno. The Ypsi & AA schools (and a zillion more) were, though.

EMU was closed today.

They should just have citywide snow days for all nonessential jobs--Ann Arbor is *still* a mess, especially Kerrytown, where they can't scrape/salt because of cobblestones. "All nonessential Ann Arbor workers are hereby given a snow day." Whee. We could all go out and make angels.
