Happy New Year - 2004-12-31 15:43:22 I had a downy woodpecker visit my house many times this fall. I would know it was outside when it began drumming on the wood siding to get at the six-legged morsels ensconced within. It left a few rows of 3/8" to 1/2" holes along the front of my house. When the weather turned colder, it winged off to parts unknown. Beautiful bird.* * * * * * * * * * * * Laura - 2004-12-31 16:23:14 In fact I do have a firepit in the backyard. I dug it (a 12-foot-wide, 5-foot-deep cone) the first year I moved here. The fireplace is lined with rocks. There's a bench nearby and rock steps leading down to it. The thought of a New Year's fire is now very attractive, thanks to your suggestion. I might fire it up and take my champagne out there, to toast my toes and the stars. Oh, and a fat brisket is lined up for dinner. Downy woodpeckers are beautiful, as you say. This one seems to hang around the whole winter. I have 16 suet cakes in the freezer, ready to try and encourage it to stick around.* * * * * * * * * * * * Laura - 2004-12-31 16:26:20 (will toast the dashing Le Flaneur as she warms her bones by the fire tonight).* * * * * * * * * * * * add your comment: |
