I had a downy woodpecker visit my house many times this fall. I would know it was outside when it began drumming on the wood siding to get at the six-legged morsels ensconced within. It left a few rows of 3/8" to 1/2" holes along the front of my house. When the weather turned colder, it winged off to parts unknown. Beautiful bird.

In fact I do have a firepit in the backyard. I dug it (a 12-foot-wide, 5-foot-deep cone) the first year I moved here. The fireplace is lined with rocks. There's a bench nearby and rock steps leading down to it. The thought of a New Year's fire is now very attractive, thanks to your suggestion. I might fire it up and take my champagne out there, to toast my toes and the stars.

Oh, and a fat brisket is lined up for dinner.

Downy woodpeckers are beautiful, as you say. This one seems to hang around the whole winter. I have 16 suet cakes in the freezer, ready to try and encourage it to stick around.

(will toast the dashing Le Flaneur as she warms her bones by the fire tonight).
