If they don't owe Biltmore anything and they find a commercial developer fast ("Biltmore, which has spent four years marketing and designing the project, does not handle commercial development.") this might not be a bad thing. Biltmore has a slow reputation. Here's their release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, December 22, 2004 BY: EDWARD B. KORYZNO, JR., CITY MANAGER (734) 483-1810 In 2001, the City of Ypsilanti issued a request for qualifications for a developer to implement the redevelopment of the Water Street Project Area. At that time, the City of Ypsilanti selected Biltmore Properties Corporation as the party with whom it would attempt to negotiate a definitive development agreement for the Water Street project. The City of Ypsilanti has decided to cease discussions with Biltmore Properties regarding development of the Water Street Project Area. Several factors have led to this decision, including: The inability of the parties to reach agreement on several major issues relating to the development. The Citys continued desire and commitment to negotiate with a single developer to undertake both the commercial and residential components of the project. The City strongly believes in the viability and importance of the project to the Citys future and looks forward to selecting another developer. The Citys original request for qualifications resulted in many quality proposals from developers. The City anticipates a higher level of interest in early 2005 because of the Citys significant progress over the past few years in property acquisition, resolution of title issues, demolition, environmental remediation, obtaining an additional $4.5 million in grants and loans to support the project, as well as additional characterization of property conditions. In the near future the City will release a request for proposals to select a new developer for the Water Street project area. The City will provide updates and milestones on the development and implementation of a new selection process as the information becomes available. For further information on this release, please contact Edward B. Koryzno, Jr., City Manager at 483-1810.

Hm. Thank you for posting that release, Leighton. The contamination must be fairly bad if they couldn't agree who'd pay to clean it up. Although you'd think they'd have ironed out such details before entering into an agreement.

My fear is that Biltmore will sue for breach of contract, and if so, it'll be time to pull down the blinds and turn off the lights for Ypsi.

A single developer is silly. Unless it's for a theme park. Or a trailer park.

A theme park.........(suddenly lost in thought)...."Ypsiland?"

Years ago developers tried to build "Space World" on the south side of 94 across from the Mariott. The township didn't like the idea and discouraged it. I suppose "Iraq World" might work now. It's predicted to be in the news for a long, long time.

How about a historical theme park with live skits? I'd go to that, if the acting weren't hagiographic cheese, a la the Henry Ford Museum.

People continue to scoff at my casino suggestion. Hell, I might even be able to get a job. Breaking losers' fingers if they didn't pay up, pasting sequins on showgirls' bosoms, or parking cars.

as my own focus is a narrow one, i will add the one interesting bit of trivia i have to offer- dave hamilton, the realtor they interviewed, was the agent from swisher that handled the sale of the peninsular property. He also hasn't returned my request for an interview (yet). I can't tell from the article what his involvement is in wawawaa* street, if any.

*(to say it properly, you have to go "waah-waah-waahhhh" like a trumpet played after a very bad joke being told)

Raymond, (suppressing laughter) I have never, nor would ever, scoff at such a fine suggestion. In fact, in all seriousness, after a certain point, I do think things get to the point where you have to hold your nose and invest in something that will actually be profitable--like a casino--even if it's not exactly the "ideal" business. I can live with it if it pumps some cash into Ypsi.

Brett: cute; that reminds me of the wah-wah-wah "we lost" sound on Car Talk when the guys lose "Stump the Chumps." At any rate.

Biltmore seems to have their hands full in Cherry Hill. In Romania, the locals in Sighisoara (Vlad Dracul's home town) we're furiously debating Draculand when we were there. Prince CHarles and some vampires sucessfully stopped it too.

Thanks for the link, Leighton. The story said they'll locate it nearer Bucharest. So that's something to look forward to.

Leighton, may I ask, was this when you visited the bone-decorated church? (thinks to self: maybe that's what Ypsi needs).

A casino isn't so far off...Downtown Ypsi should fall back on being the entertainment (even faux "red Light") district for the county. What does well here? Club Divine, DejaVu, TC's (even the Elbow Room, when I let it). It's a district where kids try to get away from their parents or Ann Arbourites get things they can't get in AA (no comment on the illegal or purient stuff). That was the 1st step for Royal Oak and Ferndale. Ypsi just tried to skip the loud music / punks and go right to the bedroom gay community. Doesn't work that way

The Romanian trip was after the skull Chapel trip. Though all of Transylvania is like a skull chapel.
