Thanks for mentioning me here. Laura! I am not sure whether I will spring for the deluxe membership but I am at least considering it. It is a fun and easy way to get my thoughts out there where others can read them!

You're welcome of course Vince. It is addictively fun, I agree, and I learn a lot from people's comments. I have to wonder about the future, though. Before long, we'll have 50-year-old blogs online. Is there enough server space for all those virtual words?

Whee! I am having lots of fun with my blog so far, having just posted reviews of the upcoming Rose Bowl (in which my beloved Wolverines will try to do better than they did last year) and this Sunday's Packers/Jaguars and Lions/Vikings games. More to come later! Michigan women's basketball plays tomorrow, so I will likely have something to say about that after the results are in.

OOPS! Sorry about the duplicate post! I tried to correct "reviews/previews" and ended up posting both versions by mistake!

Those poor Lions aren't having much of a season thus far, are they?

they are currently at 5 wins and 8 losses with three games to go...so potentially they could still end up breaking even! And the conference they are in (the National Conference) has more than their share of less than average teams, so the Lions may even still make the playoffs (not very likely, but still possible). The Lions are better than they were a few years ago, but are still something of a work in progress.

Oh, it's better than I thought, actually. It's clear you know quite a lot about this subject. May I ask you a somewhat silly question, just out of curiosity? Aside from student fans, what are the 3-4 U-M women's sports most popular with the public? Just wondering; thanks Vince.

I have not attended games/meets for all of the women's teams, but of the ones I have, softball and gymnastics seem to draw a lot of fans. Both teams have been near the top of the national rankings in recent years which I think helps (everybody loves a winner and all that). In general, Michigan's women's teams struggle for fan support, I think in large part because there are so many other spectator sports opportunities in the Detroit/Ann Arbor/general southeast Michigan area...the Michigan men's teams, the Detroit pro teams, EMU, Wayne State, U of Detroit/Mercy, Oakland U all compete with the U of M women for the public's attention and ticket money.

Hmm. Vince, I've heard it said that "this is a hockey town," which I had not suspected; would you say that is true?

Yep, ice hockey is a pretty big deal in Detroit and in Michigan in general. The Red Wings have a solid winning tradition (with the exception of the 1970s which were not a good era for them) and college hockey is also popular with Michigan, Michigan State, and even some of the smaller universities such as Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State often having good teams.
