The Ypsi depot also has a history of collision by train. The city should require the developers to paint a target on the apartments.

Yes, you're right; now that you mention that I dimly remember reading about it. You do have to wonder why they built it, and the original signal house, which I believe was also destroyed by train, right next to the tracks and not at least a little bit off.

Meanwhile the Amtrak infrastructure is crumbling: "Congress consistently underfunds maintenance budgets on the rail system. Rail bridges require repair, and 125 rail cars and 43 locomotives are laid up because of lack of funds to repair them."

I just got off the phone with the author of the article. I let her know it was biased and self-serving. Then I sent the following letter to the editor (which, like others I've sent, they may not publish):

To whom it may concern,
This letter is in regards to your December 6th story concerning the new apartments being constructed in Ypsilanti, at the former site of the Peninsular Paper Company.
The article by Ms. Heinrich makes the clear assertion that Edwards Communities of Ohio, and especially Richard Kirk, the firm's president, have done a wonderful service to the community by keeping the smokestack of the building, to incorporate it into the design of the new structure.
It apparently was not in the interest of your staff to investigate the matter, as you would have learned that this smokestack was in fact once connected to a 130 year old mill, which was the area's oldest surviving example of our industrial past, and which Edwards Communites completely demolished over the last year.
This mill was not only a great historical treasure, but was also a valuable resource which could have been re-used for many different functions, and easily stood for centuries to come. This Ohio developer, with the full cooperation (and even encouragement) of the Ypsilanti Government, destroyed a precious structure which is now lost to the community forever.
That Mr. Kirk decided to cynically maintain the now-useless smokestack of Peninsular, while avoiding preservation of any other part, is an incredible insult to many residents of this city; but your choice to then publish an article hailing him as a hero of historic preservation is both absurd and frightening.
The chimney is not art. But your article was a surrealist masterpiece.
Thank You.

thanks, adiann. I'm getting really, really sick of having to write mean letters to people. I think after this I might be taking a hiatus from it just for my own sanity.

Your letter is good, and like addiann I liked the last sentence. Thank you for writing it, Brett.
