"Death of the Miser" is particularly interesting. Note how the light of Christ coming in through the window fails to reach the miser, due to the opulent red drapes around his bed and a sacklike shape suggesting worldly goods. In contrast, note how the arrow of Death, and its shadow, penetrate to the miser and are mirrored in the angle of the miser's left forearm. Quite a masterful painting.

He really does live here. One of the few books I do not give away is on Bosch. His biography reads more repressed-John Norman-Collins than Dimitrius, but that just makes him more of a rock star. (In this case he'd be Slayer, who are vaguely right-wing christians who describe scenes in Hell)

I am sure it will be of no surprise that I also have a nice book on Bosch. I love his works even when they are preachy like Death and the Miser. I always liked that one because even though the light of Christ fails to reach the miser, he's got that angel there to help him. He is surprised to see death coming in the door. He has lived his life being more concerned with material things than spiritual things. And yet, even at that late hour, it is not too late.

I had to change the spark plugs on my car once, and when I went to purchase them I was delighted to find that one of the major manufacturers was "Bosch", and of course purchased that brand. I wondered how many art geeks buy their products just because of that reason.

I also wished their package design had some of his artwork on it, possibly the aforementioned detail from "delights", but with a spark plug replacing the flower bouquet.

Leighton: that sounds like a fascinating book; I looked around online for a comprehensive bio but did not find one, and now I'm very curious--I'll have to check the library, thanks for the info (that his bio is worth checking out).

Lynne: Wow--I had a completely different take on the angel. My take was that although the angel was doing his/her best to save him, still the saving light of Christ could not reach him because of the rich (velvet?) draperies, symbolizing his wealth, a barrier (eye of the needle, &c.). Therefore it was hopeless. Paintings are Rorschach inkblots for sure; sometimes they reveal a lot about the viewer.

Brett: I had to laugh. Bosch is a manufacturer of stereos too if I'm not mistaken. Your logo suggestion is.......delightful. :)
