Last week's Time magazine has an article on minorities in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. They talk about both Huron and Pioneer High.

Ypsidixit; Your site is a great source of local history and information. I was born at U Hospital in AA, and have been a lifelong Washtenaw County resident (with brief intermissions). In my time, I have wandered the county far and wide and explored many of the same places you write about here. But, you have found places I have yet to see, and background information I had not previously known. I learn things when I read you site, and I love it! I would like to thank you for your efforts, and tell you that you'll always have at least one loyal reader. Thanks again!

Dear Dan Arbor: Thank you so much for your extremely kind and thoughtful comments. I can't tell you how gratifying it is to read something so nice. I'm really touched. And I'm happy to hear from a fellow explorer who knows the wonder to be found out there in Washtenaw County. You really made my day with your comment. Thank you again.

Annarborcrat: that's a good tip; thank you. I'll see if I can dig it up later online.

Wow -- 3.0 is very low indeed, especially since grades are generally inflated to begin with (doubt the average GPA at Pioneer is a 2.0).

Why even bother with an honor society if the grade point average is going to be dropped so low?

Anna: I agree, grades are inflated from the outset, and the U.S. is pretty much rock bottom when you rank its high schools among other industrialized countries...this plan is clearly ill-advised.

Lynne: My thoughts exactly. Well, it'll give the parents the bumper sticker to plaster on the back of the car. But you'll note the ["minority"] kids quoted in the article worked hard to get their stellar GPAs, and I don't think it's fair to them to let just anyone in.

it't not fair to any of them, whatever color they are. It's appalling, I think.

Addiann: I think so, too, especially in one of the most favored school districts, if not the most favored one, in the state.

Isn't this rather like what the Supreme Court told UofM to do in order to equitably include more "minorities," don't weight applications, lower standards overall?

All men (and women) are created equal. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If the student fails, what does that say about the teacher?

Raymond: I'm afraid I'm ignorant of the final shakedown arrangement in the U-M case, whether "weighting" or lowering standards; not sure but would like to know what the final outcome is.

Ypsidweller, your comment reminds me that there's a whole genre of literature and movies dealine with great teachers who make a difference despite horrible circumstances. Usually they're very good stories. One that comes to mind is "Up the Down Staircase." I loved that when I was young. The movies "Dead Poets' Society" and "Stand and Deliver" also come to mind.

Ah, "To Sir, With Love"! "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". "Mr. Holland's Opus". "Lean on Me". Um... "Welcome Back, Kotter"??

Let's see...I've read (and have) "Chips" and found it very moving, and always watched "Kotter" while growing up & loved it. I have to say I never read/saw "Sir" or "Opus" or "Lean on Me." "Sir" sounds like (guessing) a little bit older novel.

I was espoused to a teacher for a couple of decades. She was so effective that when her health failed former students came from around the world to see her. A fund was established to continue her work of bringing people to poetry, understanding, clear-thinking, and effective writing. We met with a group of NY expatriate former students and distributed ashes (in a busy restaurant, how weird). Irate champions of repression ran for and were elected to the school board so that they could get rid of her, which they failed to do. The collective mind of humankind grew richer through her efforts. Teachers can be special. Yet, no honor roll for her. More like an ornery roll.

"To Sir, With Love", the book, was written in the 50's, maybe even late 40's. The fantastic movie version starring Sidney Poitier came out in '66.
