They should call themselves the Ypsilanti High Casinos. It would be a way of tipping their cap to Native Americans without being offensive.

Oh my gosh, I was working up to a righteous wrath and feverishly amassing my detailed arguments...till I burst out laughing.

I respect them and their request not to be associated with a mascot, but one has to assume that when the Ypsilanti schools selected the name they were doing so because it invoked a proud or tough image. I can't think of a mascot that doesn't invoke toughness -- Wolverines, Tigers, Lions, etc. I guess the Saline High Milquetoasts doesn't inspire too much fear, but for the most part mascot names don't seem like put-downs.

Well, you raise an interesting point. I'm comparing this uproar to the EMU Hurons to Eagles transition. If I remember right, local Native Americans *did* in general support the Huron mascot. It showed, as you know, just a straighforward silhouette of a Huron man. It always seemed to me to pay a straightforward homage to the Hurons without trivializing them. I was sorry to see the change to the insipid "Eagle" (why not an emu?)

Why not an emu? See the previous post about Milquetoats. Can you imagine what fun the Toledo Rockets or the Akron Zips would have with the "Emus?" I don't care how fast they are, a flightless bird isn't tough -- unless you compare it with a rhea or something.

Emus are tough. They can disembowel things with their claws. Or maybe that's ostriches. Close enough. Yes, a rhea would be even more awesome. There's the skeleton of one in the Natural History museum--mighty big and heavy. Go Rheas!

If EMU called themselves that, Danny DeVito's wife would slap an injunction on them faster than you could say "cheers." If you thought the University House cost a lot, her lawsuit would make your head explode.

Ach, she wouldn't have a leg to stand on--rheas were rheas LONG before she came along. Wouldn't stand a chance in court.

Now, to returning to Eric *'s point about mascots not seeming like put-downs. The term "brave" is antiquated and cartoonish. The YHS logo is cartoonish, too. And you have to wonder if they do war whoops at games, &c. &c. &c. I think it's safe to say this logo needs to go.

If it's toughness we want, I suggest the team be called "The Ypsilanti City Council." No matter how misguided or failed a program may be, the council won't back down.

Look at Exemplar, a vacant mess and a waste of 10.8 acres and tax breaks to match the polluted Barfield plant on Lowell.
Take the traffic-congestion-causing median in Michigan Ave, and see the vehicles idling from Hamilton to Huron and back again.
Watch the flammable sticks pile up where the paper mill used to be so all the renters will flock there with no place to park and abandon the city's houses to young couples with children.
Count the geese poisoning themselves in the peaceful Water Street prarie while they wait for further wrecking balls, more pollution to be discovered, or the city's looming insolvency.
Look what a gem the old Arlens store replaced Gilbert Park with, and consider how brick-facade shells will hold up in the damp at the river bend.

Talk about a tough team, whew, go team, go.
