The Vault - 2004-11-22 22:31:59

The smallish cemetery of Reynold's Corner's is located at Washtenaw County's extreme southwest corner, off Ely Road just a few hundred yards north of Michigan Ave near where Michigan Ave says goodbye to the county.

The first thing that grabs your eye is the vault. This 1883 vault was used to store bodies in wintertime when the ground was too hard to dig graves.

Vault Historical Plaque - 2004-11-22 22:43:12

On the vault's door is an historical plaque giving vital info about the cemetery.

"Reynolds Corners Cemetery, located in the southwest corner of Manchester Township, was initially affiliated with a local church which no longer exists. The Reynolds family owned the property at the corners of Ely Road and Michigan Ave. A vault dated 1883 is believed to have been built when the cemetery was dedicated.

"The grave of Captain Ebenezer Davis, veteran of the Black Hawk War, is one of the oldest. This cemetery is distinguished by the many Washtenaw and Lenewee County farmers interred here, including the Brighton, Holmes, Witherell, Conley, and Smalley families."

A somewhat unfriendly sign also "graces" the vault.

OK, you can tell by now that I was really taken with this vault. Anyways, on to the graves. Let's see if we can find the elusive Captain Davis.

...has my vote for the cemetery's loveliest stone.

Aha. Here, at the end of our perambulation around Reynolds Corners, is the grave of Black Hawk War veteran Captain Davis.

Another Davis veteran - 2004-11-22 23:47:04

...from the Civil War, thirty years later, lies in the Davis plot. You can recognize the characteristic Civil War shield shape that we saw in Childs Cemetery.

...here in the photogallery. The vexatious "banned" problem seems to be solved. Please feel free to comment "more cemeteries please" or "enough with the cemeteries, already" or leave a specific comment about a picture; I value all comments.
