...into the creepy interior. Here's where we got caught and were asked to leave, no doubt for the better since it was mighty creepy in there...

Yesterday we lurked in and performed for a bizarre event at St John's in Plymouth. I hadn't been there since the 1970s when I directed a production of Stravinsky's "Soldier's Tale" with members of the DSO and others.

Yesterday's gig was for the Make-a-Wish program for a four year old cancer patient who wished to be a princess. We were tucked away in the "grotto" where Cardinal Mooney's bones used to rest. We were at the very end of the line for the event, shoved into shadows, jesters in a cave.

We insisted that we were there for the little girl, and didn't do any show until she arrived. We took along a princess marionette to meet her. We snapped and presented to the girl a Polaroid pic of her and the puppet. All day people had been taking her picture, but we gave her a chance to see where she was and what she was up to. She seemed pleased, we packed our stuff, and hustled out the back door.

So, what's this to do with YSH? Often we take a step ladder to use as a set piece from which to hang and work puppets. Yesterday, we reduced our load by taking two slightly modified IV stands from which to hang marionettes and between which to stretch the rope for Brian to operate his tightrope walker. The old-fashioned enamel IV stands came from auctions at the mental hospital in the 1980s.

We take our medication as we try to nurse souls to health.

What a lovely and magical story. How kind of you to try and help the little girl. And how strangely beautiful that as part of your effort to make her feel better, the IV stands came, down a long and winding road, from the Ypsi hospital. A lovely story, Raymond; thank you.

In an insane society, a sane man must appear insane.

Well, we could discuss that thought all day, I imagine. I agree with the idea; I can see both sides of it, though.
