Prop 2 has been approved. Shit. What kind of hateful intolerants do I live among? I almost hope every last sanctimonious married person who voted "yes" ends up going through the kind of beyond-torturous divorce I went though. I am speechless.

the Wall Street Journal has a great one that changes automatically, no refreshing. (map, that is)

Shoot, I looked for it but the WSJ has a dialup-unfriendly site with too much diddly-doo to load very fast...I'll try to find it later. But thank you for the tip, Addiann.

The more I hear from the morning radio, the darker things seem. Sounds like it'll come down to a tussle over those Ohio provisional ballots, which they won't even count till 11 days from now, for some mysterious reason.

"What kind of hateful intolerants do we live among?" To make the worst simile of my illustrious career as a blog parasite, All I can think of this morning is how much I feel like Roddy Piper in "They Live".

Notable among the results is that DC (regardable as generally a haven of smart people) went over 90% for Kerry, that Bush and Kerry each won their home states with a paltry 60-some percent, and that Utah is definitely a place to avoid and maybe fence off entirely.

June 16, 1858
A house divided against itself cannot stand.
I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the union to be dissolved--I do not expect the house to fall--but I do expect that it will cease to be divided.

It will become all one thing, or all the other.
-Abraham Lincoln

then you'll love this one, also from the father of the republican party:
January 27, 1838
At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth in their military chests; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in the trial of a thousand years.
At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

(these are good quotes, Brett--thanks for posting them).

Hmm...what is his point, exactly? That overseas countries can't hurt us, or that there's a threat of domestic terrorism? It's a bit confusing to the partially caffeinated.

i think he's just saying that a democratic country can kill itself very easily, by a simple division in its ranks.
In other election news, the three people running for ypsilanti library board who opposed internet filters seem to have all lost. So expect some changes if you use the computers there.

I just looked at the county breakdown for prop 2, and washtenaw seems to be the only county in the entire state that voted NO: 98,633 to 67,281.

Hmm...his suggestion that a democratic country can kill itself due to a division in its ranks seems counterintuitive--in a democracy, as opposed to a totalitatian state, there will always be, and should be, divisions in the ranks. Personally I think the sooner we evolve past nationalistic tribalism the better. The EU is moving in that direction.

Prop 2: Washtenaw was the only one?
That just makes me sad to see such widespread ignorance elsewhere in the state. None of these people have gay relatives, daughters, co-workers, nephews, or friends, huh? Surprising.

I just realized that, strangely, in my reaction to these events, I'm sitting here simultaneously googling for quotes from the 19th century abolitionist william lloyd garrison, while in another browser window I'm also searching rowdy roddy piper fan sites looking for pictures from "They Live". It would seem to me like a very good idea to combine the two:
The success of any great moral enterprise does not depend upon numbers.

If only he had worn his kilt in that movie. That would be perfect.
FYI- Did you know that there are dozens of fan websites dedicated ONLY to his (non-wrestling) acting career?
Maybe that wasn't the most important thing I've learned on this historic morning, but it was something.
