It's interesting to see how all the houses were clustered right next to the east-west roads, and to note the relationships between 1874 landowners and current road names.

6 mph is a reasonable estimate for foot/horse speed.
most townships in michigan and ohio are 5 or 6 miles squared.
Assuming the voting is done in the center of the township, this means nobody needs to spend more than a half hour to get to the polls- much less than most people spend getting to work each morning today.
These were true 'walkable' communities.

Interesting observations as usual, Brett. You're right--assuming the polling place is in the center, it probably took around half an hour to get there, assuming the roads weren't too bad.
