During the Vietnam War, did they not report Vietnamese body counts on the TV every night? Didn't people eventually conclude in hindsight that this grisly practice was one thing that fueled such eventually widespread anti-war protest?

So I guess they just stopped. The Iraqis are not really people to us, anyways, are they? A few civilians more or less is clearly--is as a matter of our military's policy--not worth keeping track of.

The study was actually conducted by American researchers from Johns Hopkins and Columbia, and researchers from Al Mustansiriya University in Baghdad. It is being published in The Lancet. There is extensive coverage on the study and an interview with one of its authors on The New Republic's website. If you can't see it because it is behind registration, let me know.

That is a good clarification, Tom, and a good interview with Gilbert Burnham, one of the study's co-authors (it comes right up, no reg. req.). Thanks for the link.

This war is not going to be over anytime soon. One wonders how much higher that number is going to go, and the number of U.S. troops killed, which the DOD says is currently 1,107.
