Art's a pretty subjective thing, so you'll have to decide for yourself if comics fit that definition. Still, you'd be hard pressed to see better Sequential Art than Winsor McCay's, in my humble opinion. For one of the best books on comics-as-viable-medium, I must strongly recommend Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics which can usually be purchased used at Ned's, because it's often used as curriculum at EMU. As for the panel, I actually feel like that Sesame Street song... "One of these things is not like the others..." as they've put me in with legends like Marie Severin and Len Wein. Marie's one of the unsung female heroes in the world of comics, doing pencils, colors, inks -- you name it! -- in a time when women just weren't a part of that field. Outside mentioning stuff like McCloud, I think we can see comic influences in a lot of art from modernism to post modernism. Keith Herring, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol come to mind.
