The hobby store by Busch's on S. Main has a lot of railroad, town stuff. Fake trees, little people, fences, I'd try there.

Hmmm jelly bellies come in most colors, some of which might resemble rocks. A toy dump truck or something would be a nice touch.

Impending elections/fuel crisis, etc., notwithstanding, I can't believe the importance (snort) of this cake made the blog! Lynne, be assured that at least 50% of our collection of toy construction vehicles (numbering in the thousands)will be suitably smeared w/ frosting by the end of Sunday! This idea was sketched out on a napkin by all of us on the way back from a hike in the woods....now it's coming alive, thanks to all of you! Keep 'em coming!

Plus I was thinking about framing a building in graham crackers......hey, and Mom suggested digging down into the cake to make a Gravel Pit...filled with M&M's? That's a lot of sugar.....

Lynne: that's a good idea.

Iss! Of *course* your cake made the blog! This is a pressing issue. And fun. You could make a little tarp for those 2 by 4s from a sandwich bag. Find a square lipstick and put a little sticker on it labeled "Port-A-John," or make the usual whole row of them. Get some orange ice cream sprinkles to make a few judicious cigarette butts (added with tweezers).

Wow, that reminds me of one birthday when I was growing up and I had a football field cake with the little plastic players and goal posts from the electric football game! I also had the game itself. The players were supposed to be able to run actual plays, but often just went around in circles. Oh well, it was fun anyway!

That's cute. I never had a theme cake (fleeting vision of Oliver Twist). Just the bundt deal. How can one possibly make an electric football game? It seems like there are just too many variables in the game to make a foosball-type game out of it.

hey, this sounds like so much fun! crumbled oreo cookies make really realistic dirt, pirouelles (sp?) look like sewer or water pipes, pez candy could be used as bricks or paving stones. weeee!

Good ideas, c.c.--thank you. I once made a "flowerpot pudding" that astounded my family. Take a regular red clay flowerpot, line it with foil or something, fill it with choco pudding, and top with crumbled Oreos and stick in an artificial sunflower. The crumbled Oreos look exactly like potting soil, and my family's collective jaw dropped when I stuck a spoon into the "dirt" and served up a bowl of pudding--it was very funny. A great gag dessert.

Re: the electric football games. The little plastic player figures were attached to bases with brushes that could be adjusted to make the players go in the direction you wanted them to. There was also a "quarterback/kicker" figure that could throw and kick the little felt ball.Like I said in my previous post, all this worked better in theory than in actual practice. I must have gotten my game set for Christmas 1971, because the set always came with figures for the teams that played in the most recent Super Bowl. Mine came with the Dallas Cowboys and the then-Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts who played in the January 1971 Super Bowl. Since I was and still am a Green Bay Packer fan, I ordered the set of Packers figures along with the Detroit Lions so I could play those teams against each other.

Vince, there's something very charming and nostalgia-for-a-simpler-time-inducing about your description. Hard to imagine one of them new-fangled video-gamin' young-'uns being entertained with a football game, not to mention one better in theory than in practice.

Have you visited Baker's Nook, in Saline? It's fun! You can get more ideas, cool looking boulders, even a special gel for 'water'. The challenge would be to make the cake all edible, except for the construction vehicles.
