Grooovy. "Vegetabley" is a fine word, I daresay.

It is a fine word. Although I wouldn't say cooking is "groovy," much less "grooovy,"..."fun" is about as far as I'm willing to go.

I thought dinner was made by calling 1-800-PIZZA.

You'll miss the gala celebration of 10 years of RAC, Cool (sic) City of Ypsi, and yet another EMU art exhibit at Riverside Arts Center tonight.

Actually I have the good fortune to cohabit with a person who loves to cook and is good at it.

I know, I'm sorry to miss the Riverside fun. Wednesday was picked as the best day given wildly divergent work schedules. But the exhibit will be there for a while, I understand.

I do love to cook, given the time. There is little more rewarding than confecting a bunch of groceries into something rich and savory and then seeing someone eating and enjoying it--I love that.

I'd certainly prefer to stay home tonight with a tasty dinner and a log fire. We are in the midst of production on two shows, so that can't happen anyway. As for the exhibit, yes, it'll be there for a while, but I'm more interested in the snacks and drinks which are tonight only. Of course, I'm a virtual monkey and will do tricks to get treats.

Italian stew - 2004-10-20 09:18:22
One good steak, not cheap or rubbery, preferably delmonico or NY strip. Cubed. One yam, cubed, two baking potatoes, cubed. One small onions, slicied or minced, Two or three garlic cloves, peeled & smashed. 1/3 cup olive oil. Two tablespoons rosemary leaves. Salt & pepper to taste. Slosh all ingedients in big chrome bowl. Put in glass baking dish with lid. 350 for an hour and a half. Stir after every half hour. Take out and don't open till condensation forms on lid (about 20 minutes) Open right away makes it tough. Yams with rosemary will taste like carrots. Tastes even better for leftovers when the garlic sits in it overnight.

I envy you the log fire; that's one thing I'd dearly love to have in my house, a fireplace. The Riverside do sounds fun; I hope you have a lovely time.

Oops, Italian Stew, you beat me to the comments, sorry.

Beef Stew:
Cut an entire pot roast into one-centimeter cubes. Yes, it's a lot of meat--I thought you said you were hungry. Brown cubes in batches in olive oil over high heat. Put aside. Brown minced onion and celery in the pan. Add a mix of allspice, cloves, bay leaves, and cinnamon. Add a few tablespoons* of minced garlic. Put beef back in and stir. Add a cup of red wine (not before taste testing it, of course, in the interest of quality control). Simmer 15 minutes uncovered. Add a slosh of beef broth. Cook uncovered for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally and snitching tidbits at will. Add crushed rosemary. Check & adjust seasonings just before serving. Yum. Yum. Yum.

*a lot, but I love garlic.

meat loaf - 2004-10-20 09:59:03
Turn right onto Huron parkway from Geddes. Turn left at Washtenaw. Pull into Boston Market and park. Pull out one dollar off coupon from sunday paper. Corn & mashed potatoes with beef gravy, not tomato sauce.

Never tried Boston Market. And y'know, I haven't made meatloaf in ages, but it sure would be nice this time of year (imagines cold-meatloaf sandwiches w/plenty of mustard...mmmm).

Beef Brisket - 2004-10-20 10:01:48
Pull into A-Whole Foods. Go to hot food area. Scoop up a bunch. add mac & cheese. Eat as many free samples as you can. Get in line behind 45 year old fake-hippy woman. Ignore the sighs from PHD workers making 10 bucks an hour. Pull off into woods on way home for beer.

(laughing at these recipes)...I love brisket and boil one up once in a while. It's a pricey-ish cut of meat, but oh, so tasty with peppercorns. Also makes good cold sandwiches. I refuse to set foot in Whole Foods, though, preferring the Ypsi Co-op.

Good morning sighting - 2004-10-20 10:22:29
You know its a good morning when your walking down the foggy street to meet your work ride at the corner and see the owner of the sidetrack in her nighty setting out the trash.

Good evening sighting - 2004-10-21 08:10:30
You know its a good evening when your foggy mind has taken you to a posh art event with lots of local luminaries and see the owner of the sidetrack not in her nighty pouring your beer.

the eye of the beholder - 2004-10-21 11:52:41
Is the only art in Ypsilanti art from EMU? While one might find the current EMU show at Riverside to be competent, another might find it to be dull. The Newhouse jewelry, however, is exceptional.

Very nice gentleman, incidentally, is Larry Newhouse. Lovely man.

The dinner. How did it go? Ptomaine? Accolades? Um, I don't like that stuff? Yum?
