I always feel torn this time of year. On the one hand, it is the most beautiful time of the year but at the same time, it is getting colder and I am less willing to spend time outdoors to enjoy it. Plus, I know it wont last more than another week or two. Fall is too short.

Beware the restless spirits rustling in the leaves and branches. Pitch a little something under the bridge for the troll.

Of course, ironically, as soon as I write a paean to Gallup-biking, it rains, so I hopped on the bus today, and at least had the pleasure of reading all the way to work, which I think is rather luxurious (as opposed to harried jockeying in traffic--ugh).

Lynne: only another week or two? Oh, in my mind fall keeps sliding on, on and on, the warm colors fading to a chilled sepia, till there's snow on the ground...late November or so.

Laura, Great descriptions of autumn. Fall is my favorite season. Kind of reminds me of the beginning of the journey of the Fellowship of the Rings, as well as that Leonard Cohen line..."God is alive and magic is afoot."

Thank you, Annarborcrat. Fall is my favorite season, too. I reread the FOTR a few months ago and I agree with you; the description of the Shire does have the same quality we see around us now. I loved your quote; thanks.

...and what was your response? What do you say to people who ask such questions?

Hmm, Murph, either I'm missing something or this comment drifted over from another thread.
