I think it must be looking east on Washtenaw because I am pretty sure that if it were the other vantage point there would be Normal College buildings on the left that simply arent there. It is hard to say though. I would have thought there would be a few more buildings around that area in 1900 that clearly are NOT there so what do I know? Cool photo though

Looks to me a view looking west up Washtenaw across Cross. See the door of the tower at the base. I have a postcard of the same building from with view looking east. I don't know after whom the building was named, but I recall that I've seen it cited as the "Normal Training School Main Building." The p-card view I have from the west side shows a "playground" at the northwest side/rear. The perch on the the tower seems to have gone away about when McKenny replaced the old main building, according to my six or so tower p-cards. 20s? You'd think I'd know all this. I won a contest about 10 years ago IDing Ypsi buildings. Oldtimers disease...

Lynne: it's puzzling, isn't it? Lack of modern-day landmarks and all. Boy, does 1900 Ypsi look peaceful--I'm nostalgic.

Raymond: the door! Is there only one door in the tower? You know what I'll be doing on the way home tonight...I pass the tower every day anyhow when coming 'round McKenney Union.

ugh. I meant to say that I thought it was a view looking *west* up Washtenaw...as in towards Ann Arbor. There is something about Ypsilanti that always gets me confused about directions. When I first moved to this area, I lived in Ann Arbor and got lost almost every time I came into Ypsilanti. I am pretty sure there is only one door on the tower and it is on the side that faces Summit which is the EAST side of the tower.

The door does make me think it's looking to the NW along Washtenaw.

Leighton, I was kind of hoping to hear from you since I thought you'd have a good idea...I've got to check the # of doors on the way home--amazed I can't remember that detail though I pass it every day.

I mean, not that no one else has good ideas--they're all good. Wonderful ideas. :)

Oh, and, Raymond, thanks for that intriguing info about the Normal School building (is impressed by Raymond's winning the building i.d. contest.)

Boy, would I love to see those postcards...lucky you.

Silly us. The building in the picture is the one now called Welch Hall, erected 1896. The tower was 1889. It's hard to recognize things when trees, utility lines, trucks, buses, and much more (co-eds on cell-phones?) clutter the picture. Anyway, it's still standing.

The contest I won involved identifying pictures filling in the nine letters of "Ypsilanti" used in the 1995 Heritage Festival poster. I won a t-shirt. And some other stuff.

Oops. Silly me! Yay!--Raymond solved it! Boy, that hall is old--I had no idea! I've got to try and find the exact pinpoint vantage point with a printout in hand tonight.

...also, the tower has doors on both east and west sides...

...as to post cards, I haven't nearly enough, although I would trade duplicates...

...as to seeing them, I also have some (heh heh heh) etchings...

...one of the hazards of living with a library professional is that when you put a book down to look at later and then two years hence go to get it, it has been reshelved to where it actually should be, wherever the hell that is...can't find any Ypsi books here...

Raymond, I just looked at the picture--where in God's little acre did you find that?! (how do you find this stuff?)

Well, bless your heart for taking the trouble and giving us all something so interesting and fun! That is very kind of you, and very much appreciated; thank you Raymond. Very nice!

Oops, looks like I didn't express myself clearly viz. postcards: I wuldn't dream of asking you to *give* me one of those valuable cards, no no, sorry--I was just curious to see the historical images; love looking at things like that. I see such items on ebay now and then. There's also apparently a huge market in repro historical items, just like in Philip K. Dick's novel Man in the High Castle.
