there are 119 returns for a "search across all collections" for "ypsilanti," including sheet music, photos, and...more maps! I am blown away.

Welcome to the blog, Suzie! Isn't it great? Oh, my autumn evenings are spoken for with this site.

Oh, how funny! I'm sure some folks have snuck certain substances in there and seen stars, though.

Curses! I just spent 3 hours doing searches on various places I've lived instead of doing my enormous pile of work!! Damn you for that fascinating find!

I'm still obsessively mining the site. One of the most fun things I've found to read are: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/wpaintro/wpahome.html

Apparently, Public Works in the 30s decided to collect oral histories. I've read some of the CT ones, and they are fascinating -- especially this one character, named Art Botsford. I'm sure the Michigan ones are just as fun to read. Studs Terkel, watch out!

Oh, and if you've read the book Devil in the White City (great book!), there are tons of interesting photos, booklets, maps, brochures, etc. of the places discussed in the book (it's about the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition).

I've been brosing the site all night...what a treasure. I'll check out the oral histories you mention--that sounds like a WPA project similar to the deathless "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men."
