having spent some time in nineteenth century ohio, i can assure you that the 'miasma' was a problem there as well (esp. in places like the black swamp of nw ohio). You have to give the people of the time credit, though, as they DID narrow the cause down to swamps and then proceeded to drain them, which actually resulted in fixing the problem.

You are right, people did realize it was something to do with the pestiferous swamps. By no means was I insulting my hardy pioneer forefathers, God forbid. It is just interesting to try and imagine the mindset of someone who has no idea of where some terrible disease is coming from, is all.
