I dont have a handy husband to help with my chores either. I wish I could train the dogs to do some of that stuff! Yup, it is time to get ready for another winter. My house is really drafty and I keep it around 60 degrees in the winter in order to save money on heat (something I get away with because I live alone) My 1920's house is drafty as all get out but at least I dont have to worry about not getting enough fresh air in the winter.

I do the same as you--keep it around 60 in the winter--I'm barely home as it is. And like yours my house is terribly drafty...I did go so far as to buy a roll of that caulk-tape stuff last year. Which languished in the garage all winter. And I have to weather-stip in the kitchen--boy, is that floor cold in the winter a.m. Yet I love the winter and look forward to seeing the blue-white snow sparkling in the morning.

Drafts let the radon out and help the fireplace burn better. I'll avoid proclaiming that (military) drafts might have insured the capture of Osama bin Laden and prevented the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
I also don't have a husband. I spoke this year with our state representative about why not. She clarified matters. She said that marriage is an institution established by major religions. Therefore those major religions must rule as to how government permits and sanctions civil marriage.
After our discussion I realized that this dictum violates the US Constitution in the same way that exemption from taxes for churches does. By following the demands of powerful religions and ignoring other spiritualities the state establishes the powerful as official.
There's a chill in the air. Fire the forces of repression. Welcome the dog and the cats to the futon.

I love Raymond's beautiful, dark, poetic posts.

Funny, I also justified the winter drafts to myself by telling myself it gets the radon out. Probably better than sitting in a sealed box all winter.

Yesterday Todd Mundt read a bit of news about some idiot in Michigan government braying about how gay couples can't adopt because they can't legally marry. It was breathtakingly sad to hear T.M., who doesn't have a husband either, read this horrible bit of hatred and intolerance. I was listening quite closely and imagined I heard the smallest catch in his voice as he moved on to the next bit of news.
We live in the Dark Ages.

Can't adopt as a couple, I should say. One member of a gay couple may adopt a child of course--a situation that creates a completely unacceptable legal minefield in addition to being flat wrong and against the most basic of human rights. It was an eye-opening bit of news, all right--one of the more depressing low points of the day.

to what new dreams does falltides bidding foward beg us? to what end does the cricket call, giving answer to our stirring, sleepless night ? and when the water rushes from its bed,and the sun lifts his head again.. we can see our world is boldly changed - and see our course is altered - strange...

(long pause as Laura ponders the minefield-like crossroads of life and blog...........)

Well, we found 2 spikes from the old interurban (what more could a girl want?) Mine is sitting in all its crusty glory on a handmade ceramic tray not 10 feet from this keyboard.

Paul, thanks for visiting. Regarding remembrance of things past, I have a friend who says, "These are the good old days."
