I love this song and I'm hearing it as an angry bluegrass number.

"Tiny people in the grease." May allude to Henry Ford hiring midgets to wire the airplanes. WHen I moved here I believed I would find a race of midgets. I started to look it up once, I think he only had two or three little people. Ever hear about it?

I hadn't, but Google sure had--turns out Willow Run employed 10 midgets to do wiring--thank you for an amazing heretofore unknown fact, Patrick. I'd add a link, but the page was hideous--I'll dig up a better link later.

The lyrics sound like something that Leadbelly or Woody Guthrie might have written had either of them been Ypsilanti natives.

They do, now that you mention it.

i agree about the midgets wiring planes,my mother worked at willow during wwII. how ever, perhaps it was a misspelling...maybe in the "grass" liked the mention of the peninsular paper plant in the song too...wondered how long that had been down... anyway a pretty cool site - keep it up laura

The things you learn on a blog. Welcome to the blog, eric (it's pretty clear you are not Eric *) and thank you for your very nice comment.

eric, I was wondering if it was the peninsular the song referred to, since as you know there were once many many mills hereabouts and I'm not sure how long all of them stood...we need an expert to weigh in on this.

keep thinking about that song ! (i write also,so i have to say the passion in it blew me away !)i'm going to show it to a friend and see if he can't score some music for it... i really think the song is referring to the peninsular paper plant.a friend researches old mills so i'll ask him...it's a pretty neet park there now,a little strange..but that's a cool thing ! found out about it 4-5 years ago when i started to blow glass at baron..go by it every saturday. be well all....

Oh, Eric, I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself. There's another Eric who sometimes comments here, and I was a bit confused. I wasn't doubting you--please forgive me.
You know what? I think your plan to re-set the song to music is the coolest thing yet. I would absolutely LOVE to hear this great, bitter 1940s song leap back to life. I keep hearing it, too...

Wow--your friend researches old mills? That sounds absolutely fascinating!
At any rate, thank you for such an interesting comment!

not a problem... actually,i thought you thought you knew me from somewhere.. anyway,i copied the lyrics and have been reading it over.hmmm.., may need a bit of deconstruction - keeping the integrity of the song intact of course.i started thinking "washtenaw county" might refer to the jail.... do you think you can find where you got the song again?was it hand written? on a photo ? just trying to get a feel for this very bizzare thing....

Hi eric; the song was printed on a piece of paper on display at the museum. I will check with the curator--she should be in today, Saturday--to see if she knows where it came from, and if I get any info, I'll post it here. I'm very excited that you're taking the trouble to revive this song...I'd just love to hear it performed.

eric, you were right about the mill--a friend tells me that the peninsular was the only remaining mill around at that time so, just as you said, it's the peninsular paper mill in the song--I think that's so cool.

Oops, I misremembered, I see--there are actually SEVEN Ypsi songs in Mr. Mann's fine book "Down by the Depot"--so "Burning Down Ypsilanti" is the eighth.
