Caveats - 2004-09-12 21:36:29
1. we didn't trespass, into any closed-off area--or want to, since they were so sinister and spooky--one ominous open dark doorway had my full attention--but kept to the many open paths. 2. my motto for urban exploration is "take only pictures, leave only footprints"...but on this eve of destruction, neither of us could bear the thought of those bits of Ypsi history destroyed under a bulldozer.

I have mixed feelings about OTIS. While I find it fascinating and look at it somewhat often, the thought of a person without rights or recourse to much of anything being forced to pose for a publicly displayed picture troubles me. But the much-hyped and so-called abuses of Guantanamo and Abu Ghriab (sp?) merely reflect not unusual practices in US prisons, especially in Texas where billyclubs, biting dogs, and sexual torture are common.

Meanwhile, I sniff before I step in case of decomposing corpses when I wander wastelands such as the Water Street area.

JNC stuck sticks and panties up dead womens vaginas after strangling them. I don't think posting his picture violates any of his rights.

Boy, it's getting dark in here, not that there's anything wrong with that.

YD: That's another startling photo...there's some kind of haywire weird intensity in that glare, ugh.

That's a good link, thanks Raymond. We did not see those particular sights there. Talk about a forlorn and sad site, and one you sure wouldn't want to be around come sundown.

YD, will you excuse a stupid question? As is so often the case I think I might be missing something. I know you just read the JNC book; does Water Street & environs figure in to the JNC story? Just wondering--thanks.

After hiking hobo city (North side of Forest at the Huron River) this weekend, I came out near the Frog Island Brewery setup. I noticed a square brick foundation about four by four feet. Looks like a privy foundation to me. Might have to ask to dig there. PS. If you love picking burrs out of your dogs all night long, take them running down in the woods there.

Cant remember if the book describes that area.

Collins was lodged briefly in a cell in the State Police post at Mich and Park. Although on the periphery, he thus contributes to the legacy of the Water Street Project.

He probably rode his Triumph back around there and did creepy things.

I am amazed. Raymond, you get the prize for finding the link between two shadowy pieces of Ypsi history. Indeed, as you know, the condo area officially goes from Huron all the way up to Park; it's huge. At any rate, thank you for telling us such a creepy yet interesting tidbit--I was walking on that intersection just yesterday, ugh.

yd: well, there's a lot of abandoned driveways & blind alleys back there--but I think I don't want to speculate on it. At any rate, the site does have a distinct aura of desolation.

You know, after reading the book Michigan Murders, I'm not sure that, as a juror, I could have convicted JNC on the evidence that they had. He probably did do it -- it seems consistent with the evidence -- but I would have for them to have been wrong all those years ago... It's very spooky to see a picture of him now. I always forget that he didn't cease to exist in 1970.

Yes, isn't it startling? The lurid story of the dapper college kid ended long ago...but the middle aged man still stares out from the page with unhinged intensity.

"If a person wants something he alone is the deciding factor of whether or not to take itregardless of what society thinks may be right or wrong It's the same if a person holds a gun on somebodyits up to him to decide whether to take the other's life or not. The point is: It's not society's judgment that's important but the individual's own choice of will and intellect." JNC in an essay at EMU for an Abnormal Psychology class.

shades of the Unabomber. Great (if chilling) quote, Raymond--thank you. Abnormal psych class, huh? (shiver).

My friend revisited the site & reports that he found a horseshoe, now sitting in a tub of soapy water in his kitchen.
