The Freighthouse or the Farmer's Market?

Eric *: Which is the heart of Ypsi? The whole Freighthouse scene, including the probably soon-to-die Farmer's Market.

Yeah. That is a bummer. I wasnt a regular Saturday morning freighthouse person but I sometimes liked to take a walk down there. It is a major bummer that the city couldnt afford to keep it up. My real worry about it though is that they will let the building rot or something.

I hope the city does not give up this great public space. I have had a lot of fun there over the years. Seems very short sighted to give it up.

Well, it was closed because an appraiser apparently took a look and said that the building was structurally unsound. A friend who's in the know thought that was complete buncombe, as do I. Anyways, it's dead. Locked. History. On with the Water Street Condos!

Between the Freighthouse and the railroad tracks, we see evidence that the party is over.

The Freighthouse has been scheduled to close for more than a year. That's no secret. Doors were supposed to be locked in August, but funds were raised to keep it open until the 17th of September.

Well, I and friend inspected it today during a walk and sure enough, there are new locks installed and every door is padlocked. We peered inside to see a desolately empty space. I felt sad to see it, remembering the pulled-pork lunches, chats with artists, and cups of coffee I enjoyed there, before picking up the week's produce from the farmers outside.
The last time I chatted with an artisan there, she told me the fundraising was going pretty well, so I'm dejected that it apparently fell through.
It's also a bit fishy that it's closed before the scheduled meeting date.
My friend and I inspected the building for the alleged structural weaknesses, and, although neither of us is a building inspector, it sure looked sound to us. I think the sturdy Freighthouse will be around in another 100 years, when other buildings are long gone.
I'm just frustrated that our cash-strapped city can fork out millions for those stupid Water Street condos and cheapo apartments on the paper mill site and yet not muster the relatively modest amount of cash it'd take to keep a thriving, vital community institution alive.

All of this was announced on the 1st of May in 2003. Why is it that people only get upset after something has happened? As far as the building not being up to code, if you're going to call Ed Koryzno a liar, don't beat around the bush. Finally, $300K isn't a modest sum to most people.

Calm down Eric *, and be a bit more civil, please,.
I have no idea what was "announced" on May 1, or by whom--everybody knows the Freighthouse was in danger of closing--the fact remains that the Freighthouse was closed ahead of schedule.
I have no idea who Mr. Koryzno is, and I will thank you not to put words in my mouth--please note I called no one a liar. If he is the building inspector, please reread the part where I took pains to point out that neither I nor my friend are building inspectors. I was just giving my layman's impression that it seemed odd that a sturdy old building like the F. would suddenly be deemed structurally unsound.
300K is a tiny fraction of the *millions* slated for Water Street. It's mere pennies compared to that.

I'm glad to see that a structrural engineer from Darvas and Assoc has looked at the bulding finally. Maybe they should have done that first before closing it. It's seems like the same old thing. Make the decision and then, subsequently skew the facts to support that decision

I'm honored that local brewer and generally famous Ypsilantian Dave French stops by to this blog--thank you Mr. French.
I originally thought the Freighthouse was built pretty near the ground, but apparently at least part has a deep cellar.
