I'm a university insider, so just a couple comments. Raises at universities are determined by a few things: 1) Acheivement as measured by student course evaluations and publications as well as "service", like being on committees (for faculty) or by supervisor evaluation (in cases of non-faculty folks). 2) Competing offers and periodic assessments of the competitiveness of salaries across other universities or industries (in the case of IT people, who can make a lot at a place like GM). 3) A promotion (in rank for assistant to associate, which often almost DOUBLES one's salary because that's when you get tenure), or a promotion to a new position (for administrative staff). I think that what probably happened is that those people are competent and got competing offers from somewhere else, and in order to keep them EMU had to produce raises. That's what usually happens when you get more than the standard 2-5% raise. I don't think there's anything wrong with big raises for promotions that include lots of new responsibilties, or raises based on fair market value in the face of a competing offer... so from just the numbers, it's hard to tell if there's an injustice or not. Honestly, EMU's salaries are pretty good, and that's coming from someone who works at a far wealthier university.

Oh, I just read a comment a couple threads down saying that most of these were administrator salaries, so forget what I'm saying about faculty salaries....

Actually what you said was quite interesting, as a peek into a world I know nothing of; thanks Anna.
But, yes, these 5 are admin salaries...if these folks don't also teach (I just did a quick Google to pull up their title and didn't see any mention of teaching, but didn't absolutely confirm that).

Dr Russ Larson is that list, he is the head of the English dept, very cool man as well, so does that follow the admin lead?

Well, every EMU person is on the list somewhere I suppose; I was just focusing on those top 5.

I'm a generic university insider, not an EMU insider. I have no idea who Incarnatti is, so no idea why he's putatively a fool.

I often got hefty raises at UofM as far as the numbers told the story. One year my salary increased 29% over the previous year. What the numbers did not explain was that I went from 75% appointment to 100%, and that year my group got an across the board 4% increase (remember when the national debt was paid off and business was booming?). Another year an increase of around 15% came my way. I was promoted, subject to an additional equity increase, and had the annual raise. Of course, I still thought I was underpaid, but the numbers looked wild.
Now I haven't hardly a damned dollar, and I have to contribute some of what little I do have to my medical insurance costs. I could use the $18,333,33 per month that the interim EMU prez is paid. Or the $66,000 paid to find him. Hell, I coulda found him or his ilk for say, $50,000. Do I hear $50?

Incarnatti-The man behind the scenes all the chaos at EMU, president of the regents, overall fascist dictator who has no clue as to whats best for the Eastern campus and community. I mean seriously, his right hand man is the fool who helped run K-mart in the ground
