What I want to know is the Thursday night football game on? I want to take my nephew from New York to the game. His family split for the convention.

That sounds fun. The EMU sports site says it's 7:07 p.m., against U-Buffalo.

Yep--I first saw it Monday and in fact thought of you :) since you hang out there (and go home via Parker Mill). Looks like the bigtime bridge construction is getting underway & they don't want park people underfoot.

Laura - 2004-09-01 10:25:30
or, hung out, I should say. I'm trying to remember when the bridge is scheduled to be done. Hope Dixboro down to Gallup turns into a carfree bike road.

I nice hiking spot can be found just west of McDonalds/Lucky Garden. Go into the big apartment complex next door. Go to the very back parking lot and there is a two-track visible in the far back corner of the parking lot. It will lead to the river/rr tracks and the little island that was for sale last year. Don't know who bought it but it sold for 10 grand. I was going to go up to 5 tops. Nice place to realx after work.

I've never explored that, and I'm astonished to hear about the sale of an island! Do you know the name of the island, or who bought it? Would it be legal to live on an island in the Huron without sewer system, &c.?

Laura again - 2004-09-01 10:45:18
(wonder how they figure out the property tax on an island in the Huron in Ypsi).

lynne - 2004-09-01 10:47:30
That sounds like a neat place to take a dog for walk. I will have to check it out. An island in the Huron River sounds like a bad place for living because of flooding. But if one owned the island, it would be a fun place to camp.

Laura - 2004-09-01 10:50:46
Yes, ypsidweller's spot sounds like an area to explore. I'm dying to see the island. The whole notion of private ownership of an island is a bit mind-boggling to me.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

yd - 2004-09-01 10:51:19
The island has no way for a car to get to it. Plus its partly wetlands so I doubt anyone will be able to build on it. It was on the Wash. County auction site last year. But its still pretty open for exploring as far as I could tell.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-09-01 10:53:21
I'm hoping it was an environmental group who bought it. I'll have to dig up the county auction site to see what other gems are up for sale.

Don't get too excited about the land for auction. Every year prople get all worked up about it. The land for sale near Baldwin Michigan is not all that nice and you can buy land around their dirt cheap anyway (Lake county is the poorest county in Michigan) About ten years ago I went up north to bid on a small triangular piece of land the state was selling on the pine river. It was listed as 150 ft by 50 ft by 75 ft. When I looked at it it was actually about ten by ten ft due to erosion. And it was surrounded by state land that was accesible to everyone anyway. Plus the taxes were 200 a year. For a cattail speck that you couldn't build on anyway. Kind of a scam for the state to get money.

Laura - 2004-09-01 11:14:56
well, I have to smile at that story, I must say. No, I guess you couldn't build much on a 10 x 10-foot "estate." :)

I'm really curious about how much EMU folks are paid. Nobody in academe is getting rich, even at elite universities, and many (e.g. University of Illinois) have had multi-year pay-raise freezes...
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-09-01 13:11:52
I'd love to know, too. I dimly remember seeing a salary table for U-M, with salaries for the many different ranks of adjunct/associate/assistant prof...maybe there's info out there for EMU.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

tom - 2004-09-01 16:16:02
Every year, the AA News publishes a salary table for U-M. That data is public information. I quick Google search turned up nothing for EMU, but I imagine an enterprising reporter could get that data easily enough.

that's a good tip, and thank you for checking, tom.

oh, and Dan Seely freakin rocks. one of the best instructors on campus, bar none.

Laura - 2004-09-01 19:31:38
Scott, that is so helpful, thank you! I can't see PDFs at home but will check that out during lunchtime at work tomorrow.
Scott! did you take a class of Dr. Seely's? I took a linguistics class with him and he made me completely fall in love with the whole subject--he is GREAT.

Laura again - 2004-09-01 20:19:30
Scott, just curious: I got an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at EMU; was that your program? Or another type of teacher certification? Don't mean to pry. Just wondering how you too wound up in one of Seely's classes.

Small world -- one of my best friends from undergrad was in the same program as you, Laura, and we're all around the same age. She teaches ESL at Washtenaw now, and lives in Ypsi. Does that ring a bell?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Anna - 2004-09-01 20:29:12
Whoa, thanks, Scott. Those salaries are TOTALLY competitive, even with the best schools! Esp. since those are 9-month salaries, if they're faculty salaries, meaning that most of those people can make 2/9 more if they get a grant or teach extra courses over the summer.
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-09-01 20:45:46
(dangit, I'm dying to look at those salaries).
Anna: Hmm, there were about 35 people in my program when I was there, and I'm afraid I don't know of anyone teaching at WCC right now. I loved ESL, though--it was such a creative job (I worked overseas & at the Michigan Language Center in AA for some years), with the opportunity to trick people into learning something via creative materials. I loved my students. Good memories. Lots of fun.

Incidentally, Y. would like to ask the four winds if Ypsidweller was wearing a *lime green shirt* today. A lime green shirt wearing biker passed her both going to and coming from AA today--man alive, that biker was moving on Huron heading back to Ypsi this afternoon. Just wondering.

re: emu salaries, almost everyone on the wxyz list are administrators with 12 month appointments....a few raises may reflect promotions, and some faculty on the list reflect acting as administrors on a temp basis....for both u-m and emu all staff salaries are available to the public....at emu they are in the library...
* * * * * * * * * * * *

Laura - 2004-09-02 08:38:35
Salaries: wow. What's with the double-digit increases on the first page? That's just a tad above inflation. How is it that the top 5 people on the list got salary increases of nearly 20%--27%?!
