What a cool old picture! The Bentley Historical Library (U of M Ann Arbor) website has all the old Michigan football team pictures, back to the days of leather helmets and even further back to when the players wore no helmets at all. It is interesting to see how the uniforms and equipment have evolved over the years. On the other hand, the basic design on the Michigan helmets (maize wings and stripes on a blue helmet shell) has not changed since 1940 when coach Fritz Crisler (after whom the basketball arena is named) brought the design over from Princeton. At Princeton, it was orange wings and stripes on a black shell. Much different from that school in East Lansing, where they can't seem to decide whether they want the Spartan head or the Block "S" on their helmets! The 1932, 1933, and 1934 Michigan team pictures include someone who would later become president of the United States, none other than Gerry Ford! Another striking thing is how few players were on the squads back in the day. Up until about the 1960s, players were generally expected to play offense, defense, and special teams. Today there is much more specialization and so rosters are much larger and team photos include many more players.

Isn't it nice?
Knowing less than nothing about sports, I had no idea about the specialization of sports and the bigger teams as a result--that's interesting, Vince, thanks.
