It sounds like fun! I was looking forward to Heritage Festival all month because even though I have lived in Ypsilanti for over 10 years, I've only gone once because I usually take a vacation this time of year. Oh well, I just wasnt feeling up to it. There is always next year.

It's pretty much the same each year. Lumberin' show, traveling vendors, music stage. It'll all be there next year. Latino Fest is coming up in Sept. in Riverside Park, which should be much fun (I am especially looking forward to trying the different foods--what exactly is a Cuban sandwich?--and am hoping they'll have paella).

What? No cheese-steak hoagie? :) Had a good time as well. Checked out the hot-dog eating contest. Played chess against the "wizard" at the pavilion who was playing 20 games at once. And, of course, the ducky race.

I watched the hot-doggers too--one guy dipped all his buns in water before consumption....not terribly appetizing.
No cheese-steak hoagie (or elephant ear)--those chips pretty much did me in. Left just before ducky race.

I like the performance art hot-dog-eatin' contestant in the last heat. He wore some kind of contamination suit. The chocolate-dipped Key Lime pies were small and pre-made, but good.

psyching out your fellow dog-eaters is smart.
shoot, I was tempted by the key lime pies; next year. Of course, the Saline Fair is coming up in early Sept. (includes demolitions derbies on Sept. 6 & 11).

I waved while I skulked around the bookmobile in the parade. Did y'all wave back?

As for me unfortunately I missed the Sat. parade (went on Sun.). Sounds fun, though, to be in the parade.

I enjoyed the people watching. As I was looking at theses funky little bi-planes that some gent had made out of empty pop and beer cans, someone walked by and said, "thats a waste of a deposit" I thought they were cool folk art, my friend boought a Miller High Life one... PS The cheese steaks were terrible, go to Gabe's on Michigan Ave if you need a fix.

I liked the bi-planes made from beer cans. Of course, I have several bushels of beer bottle tops, so I'm biased. The planes inspired me so much that I went home and drank lots and lots of Labatt while cooking outside in castiron inspired by the whatever-they-are in tents with olden day stuff.

I thought the biplanes were clever and resourceful. Certainly eye-catching. I love cheese steaks so I'm keeping your tip in mind; thanks Patrick. raymond: I had the impression that there were fewer reenactors this year, and kind of almost removed from the rest of the festival.
