I know I'd be pissed off if Iraqis had blown up the infrastructure here and then brought in their own workers to repair it while I was out of a job. Invaders fixing the lights, driving the trucks, digging the holes, laying the bricks, appointing the government, pumping the oil, all at pay rates which I would never have seen in a lifetime. Workers who would then return to their McPalaces, driving gas-guzzling SUVs, rivaling the bounty of Saddam. Yes, I'd resent it.

Hmmm. I think that the worry is that if we pulled out now, Iraq wouldnt have a secular government and would end up like Iran. But I have been watching Iran lately and have noticed that the more they are left alone, the better things get there. Iran has a long way to go, of course, but they seem to be headed in the right direction.

The bigger issue, to me, is whether the people of Iraq even WANT the kind of democracy were trying to spoon-feed them. Remember that Allawi was just another Baathist strongman before he went into exile, and the kind of rhetoric he spews now is no different from Saddam really. He's another strongman, but he "Our" strongman I guess, and we'll be propping up whoever for the next 20 years.

Raymond: your comment is right on target, as usual.
Lynne: Iran is next on the American hit parade of countries to civilize: I imagine we'll be sending troops there within 6 months.
DaveD: you are also right on target; I personally think we should pull out immediately, stop meddling with a people we don't even understand, and let the Iraqis sort out their own government, even if that entails some initial confusion. Saddam is gone: now let the Iraqis figure out what they want as government.

I hope you are wrong about Iran. Here is the thing. Since we have gone and made Iraq unstable, it actually might not be a good idea to just leave. (which doesnt mean that I agree at all with how things are being handled there)But goodness, Iran is stable and butting into things there will...well...make it like Iraq. I have to admit to having all kinds of misconceptions about Iran until I started reading a blog written by a woman in Tehran. Then I did some research and have come to the conclusion that about the worst thing we can do would be to do anything with Iran other than to try to restore diplomatic relations.
