Never thought I'd feel nostalgic for the Clinton years.

What civil rights were violated? I'm not saying there weren't any, but from what you've written, things were done by the book for a change.

I do hope you're joking.
Review time: 4th Amendment and more details about case law relating to searches in noncriminal cases.
The problem in this case was the warrant, which apparently was extremely broad in its wording, without any specifics whatsoever--a detail I didn't put into the original story, I realize.

"Unreasonable search and siezure" no longer exists. The reasons? "We're at war. We must bring them to justice. They hate our way of life. We must strike first. We received an anonymous tip."

Each month activity logs reveal hits from <.mil> and <.gov> domains on my silly web pages. Some of the hits appear to be "crawlers" seeking keywords. Others I hope are lonely soldiers looking to see if there is life on this planet.

Even though I've been thoroughly investigated by the Washtenaw County Sheriff, the Michigan State Police, and the FBI at least six times, I'd be surprised if Homeland Security would know of my clearances or even recognize them.

Once everyone in the country is in an all-pervasive national database everything will be okay, right?

Yes, I imagine Homeland S wouldn't care about those other clearances, since they appear to be a completely autonomous entity. And yes, once MATRIX is in full swing, I'm sure that will smooth things out considerably. (/sarcasm)

As I recall when the "Patriot Act" was jammed through the legislative process in the wake of 9/11, only a few folks said Wait! to their representatives in Washington, and fewer still actually read the damn thing. I didn't. As it turns out, governing by fear is scary indeed.

I didn't read it either, except in bits and pieces on blogs here and there.
It's also been pointed out that 9/11 was not an instance of domestic terrorism. So this egregious witch-hunting of aged Ypsi rosarians seems just a tad misguided to me. Doesn't exactly fit the "profile" of the actual terrorists.

To be fair, there have been a lot of civil rights violations that have happened before the war on terror began. Look at all the stuff that happened in The WAR ON DRUGS

Yes, that's a point well taken.
