Hmmm. That is quite interesting.

Thanks for your nice comments. I've been raptly exploring this topic in the no fewer then 3 E. I. books I received yesterday. I remember when I was a kid I read Erich von Daniken's books that posited extraterrestrial construction of the heads...the real story, brought to light by that very recent pollen and garbage heap analysis, is much more interesting. Now I'm wondering about other "mystery sites" around the world and what invisible yet commonplace changed circumstance has rendered them mysterious.

After looking at a globe for the 1st time, I've wanted to go there as well. My stepfather went deacdes ago. The trip involved Chilean and Argentinian ships and planes. Getting there is more than half the fun supposedly.

That sounds very exciting and fun, Leighton. I imagine, then, that you've seen his pictures of the island?--that would certainly make me want to go even more, if I saw evocative photos from one's stepdad. The island was the property of Chile for many years as you know and apparently still is to some extent...it does have an airport now, recently spiffed up by NASA of all people as an emergency landing spot for spacecraft (the shuttle, I guess). So maybe people can hop over by plane from Chile these days.

correction: the priests lived in the large boat-shaped houses, which were situated 200-300 feet inland from the statues. Common folk lived in humbler homes yet further inland from the priests.

Also, I was interested to learn that the islanders developed the only written language in all of Oceania, called rongo-rongo, which to this day remains untranslated.

Crazy, NASA has fingers in every open space for a Shuttle problem. A few US airports are designated as well (Tampa has one, despite being about 20 seconds from the Cape in Shuttle speed). Never saw pics from my step dad's travels to Easter Island. But I think he may have written an article for Life or a travel magazine decades and decades ago.

Designating Tampa as one of the emergency airports seems a bit silly.

It was actually McDill AFB (which was also missile command, so we felt like we had bullseyes on our heads through the 80's). I'd rather Tampa get bombed than Easter Island though.
