You sound like a fun Aunt! As for the goods made in China that get sold here so cheaply. I share your concern about the conditions of the workers. Here is the thing though. All of those workers chose to work under those conditions because their alternatives are *worse* (in their minds at least). On the other hand, conditions for Chinese labor could be much better and it doesnt seem right that so many people in this country should lose their manufacturing jobs to a place where some of the cost advantage comes not from cheap labor but from not spending money to make a decent and safe work environment. Wouldnt most people be willing to pay a little bit more for something that meant that someone didnt have to suffer to make it?

Unfortunately, most people would not be willing to pay even a bit more for something that meant that someone didn't have to suffer to make it...the disgusting history of maquiladoras is a case in point. As for me I continue to shop for clothes exclusively at Value World for the slight consolation that all the goods I buy there are cast-offs that don't feed into the system...
