...and, to make it extra stupid, they put filters--$800 smackers a year--on only 2 of all the computers. So thanks to self-righteous, pushy, do-gooder censors, the library now has $1600 less a year with which to operate. Way to go, idiots.

Stay away from those computers if ya wanna Google "great tits" or "sapsuckers," you'll go on report.

The buzzards who clamored for filters and signed petitions distributed by (guess who!) Brenda Stumbo should pop up a buck each and pay for 'em themselves. Special Assessment Tax Roll.

Oh, and don't try to look up equus asinus in the vernacular. The librarian will boot your ass out.

We want Blue footed Boobies and Tits! I once was training someone to do an introduction to the internet program. Having recently been birding, I googled Barn Swallows and ended up with really crazy stuff. Little kids are smarter than adults on computers. Those filters won't stop em' and probably do more harm than good. Just like the noble experiment, prohibition.

yay, Patrick ID'd the birds! :D
Birding is fun. Lots of lovely goldfinches in Gallup Park lately, plus a large white heron today.
I agree with you, probably most kids can do end runs around technologies their parents by and large don't understand as well...all in all, a complete waste of $ in this case.

That is rather unfortunate. I always find those kind of filters to be a bit insulting. There is a really evil part of me too that almost sees them as a challenge. I am going to have to fight the urge to go to in there just to see how much I can get past their filters. Sheesh. And $800 a year per PC they put it on? This is software that hardly does anything. It typically filters out lots of good stuff and it never filters out all of the bad stuff. Plus a lot of the companies that make those filters put sites on the bad list that are questionable. Sites that have certain (usually left leaning) political views or example. I have even heard of certain companies filtering out sites like Planned Parenthood because they have information about birth control and *gasp* abortions.

"We-Blocker" is free (supposedly, although RealPlayer's free version is compatible with one file from a high school garage band in Mongolia...there's usually a catch with the free stuff, but they could have done WAY better than this).

The township officials (primarily stumbo and roe) wanted all computers filtered, and that they did not get. The library is offering one filtered workstation at each location to provide an additional service to those that want filtered access. It most definitely did not cost $875 per computer....that's an error on the part of the Ann Arbor News, who incidentally came out with an editorial in favor of filtering in Ypsi. There are several folks running for library trustee as a result that wish to filter all internet workstations. Although a lot of people don't watch these races closely, you may want to do a little research on this race in November.

Welcome to the blog, Colby! Thanks for your comment.
The price may have been my misreading--on re-read it's unclear whether the price applies to one or both computers.
And the people running for trustee is a good tip--I definitely *will* do some research to find out who supports it.
