Could you please expand on these levels?

well I certainly agree - with all your levels! Shades of horrifying science fiction.

I don't think it's a true story. The drug companies would certainly not stand for it. Vicadin and Oxycontin and other drugs are opiates. If they block the effects of heroin, then drug companies couldn't turn us into drug addicts--they wouldn't be able to steal England's insurance and tax money.

Dirtgrain--that is a very interesting point! You're right, "Schedule 2" drugs, prescription drugs one level below illegal drugs, are categorized as those with a high potential for abuse.
Eric--Level Expansion:
Level 1: Vaccine Level. Totally untested in long-term trials--no one knows what the real long-term effect is.
Level 2: First-generation nature of vaccine. Were I a parent, I sure wouldn't want to have a first-generation vaccine pumped into my kid--not till its safety is proven over time.
Level 3: Vaccine strength. Anything powerful enough to knock out a desire for drugs--a desire that can drive people to insane acts--is not something I want put into a child's growing body.
Level 4: State control of individual. Even with something I don't approve of, such as drug use. The principle galls me.
Level 5: Insults the child. If I were to grow up & learn that my parents vaccinated me with an anti-drug vaccine, I'd feel they had a pretty low opinion of my common sense, not to mention their own parenting. End of Level Expansion.

So you are saying drug addiction in not a disease?

So you are saying people are not responsible for their own choices?

This article has brought up some interesting ideas. I firmly believe that drug addiction is a disease. I believe it should be treated medically rather than with incarceration. As such, if it's a disease and can be vaccinated against, then I would be in favor of it. Your comments about parenting and common sense make it sound like you think drug users/addicts are weak minded people that had bad parents. That is pretty harsh.

Perhaps we are saying the same thing. There is a level of personal responsibility to every decision, but if diseases can be prevented, then I am in favor of preventing them.

Don't groups such as AA say "if you lose control of your life because of use of alcohol (or any drug), then stop imbibing." Which says to me that behavior modification is the treatment, not medicine.

The AMA calls alcoholism a disease (and has for over 40 years). I may be weak in character, but I'll always take the advice of a doctor over a twelve-step program.
