Wow. That was beautiful. It almost makes me want to start riding a bike to some job in downtown Ann Arbor. But, alas, I work in a boring old office park off of Ellsworth. :) Still, I am thinking I might dust off my old bike and see if that bike shop on Michigan Ave can fix it up for me so I can at least cruise around town a bit.

Thank you Lynne for your very kind comment! The county needs more bike paths--none of this clinging-to-the-right-side-of-the-lane-and-praying-for-deliverance. Bikers do have a right, under Michigan law, to use public roads (aside from highways) for biking. So, next time some irate cell phone-chatting SUV-er honks at you or screams out the window to "get off the road," just smile pleasantly and wave (I also find that blowing kisses is particularly enraging to these folk). Bike on!

Yes, Bicycles in Town could undoubtedly tune up your bike for a fraction of what you'd pay in AA. Plus you could pet their shy yet charming resident cat "Ypsi," & glean biking fashion tips from the gentleman who's the self-appointed "BIT Fashion Police." All in all, a very worthwhile visit!

I love that ride, especially in the middle of a weekday when there aren't so many people out there. If you like trafficless, beautiful biking, Lower Huron Metro Park and Kensington Metropark have awesome paved paths (the Kensington one connects to a paved path through the Island Lake Recreation Area where there are beautiful fields and woods (which remind me of Northern Michigan)). There is also supposed to be a rail trail somewhere in Pincney, but I haven't gone there yet. But your description has me wanting to bike Gallup Park again. Thanks.

Thank you for your kind words, addiann and Dirtgrain. Dirtgrain, I've heard a lot of good things about Kensington but have yet to try it (no car bike rack yet). Will look up the location of the Lower Huron Metro Park--thanks for the good recommendations. And I'm thinking it might be possible to bike out to the lovely Waterloo Nature Area on a bike day trip, once I get an emergency/spare parts kit together.
